Bro Force (prototype)

  • Has anyone suggested Ripley, as seen in Aliens?

It's tempting to suggest that she use either the pulse rifle or flamethrower, but I'm not sure of how to differentiate the former from the other machine guns in the game and the latter is already taken by Mr. T (and I'm not convinced that "another flamethrower, but not quite the same" is sufficiently different). Perhaps she could use the grenade launcher as her primary weapon.

On the other hand, if one were to do something a little different with her, perhaps she could be a melee character -- but in her loader: slow, but very powerful. Her secondary weapon might involve letting loose an alien, either as a (dangerous to the player as well as enemies?) NPC or under player control, as with Dredd's rocket (if I recall correctly) -- it's not terribly in-character, but is different, at least.

@Douzeju If you haven't already, I recommend watching the 1995 Tank Girl movie. In fact I recommend watching it even if you have already watched it.

It's an incredibly silly action romp, with a lot of gratuitous tank barrel stroking, and it starts with a dude stripping naked (i.e. it has got some feminist subtext), and it's got a ton of great future distopian ideas in it. I honestly don't understand the 4.8 rating on IMDB. It deserves a 8 just for having Malcolm McDowell suck the water out of someone and drink it in a champagne glass... everything after that is a bonus.

Though from what I read, the movie isn't all that much like the comics. I'd suggest going in with some low expectations and enjoy it for its grand camp.
  • Ripley's special is a self sacrifice to unleash a chestburster... Out of her own chest! :O maybe it's a player controlled alien until it dies, or a mega tentacle that destroys everything in a line, or something :) but she pays her life for it! For a chance at a super awesome special, that's worth it :)
  • @Tuism Would it cost the player a life? (As in something that kills Ripley) Or maybe the player loses the life if the alien/tentacle thing dies... so massacring a path to the nearest caged bro is in order?
  • @BlackShipsFilltheSky, what about sacrificing ripley for a facehugger. Then if you kill a mook you become a xenomorph...or go through the alien life cycle in some way. Haven't watched the movies so those are my only two buzz words. :P
  • I love that! You lose a life and respawn as a facehugger - heck, just pop right out of her chest, essentially switching character. The facehugger has crap offensive capabilities, but can facehug - and become a xenomorph that TAKES THE FORM OF THAT ENEMY. So dogs would spawn a faster xenomorph, brutes would spawn a bigass xenomorph, etc etc.

In fact if you make it literally burst out of her chest, people could use it as an air double jump and save themselves if their Ripley was about to fall into a pit or get shot or something. It's an escape and second chance :)

It's like... Kirby, but more AWESOME :P

(but yeah dunno if you guys wanna make ALL THAT extra work for yourselves, having to make multiple playable mook xenomorphs)
  • @Tuism, it looks like an interesting Indie game concept.
  • edited
Although these all sound like cool ideas, I think being able to turn any living enemy into a xenomorph would be too much work for the devs. I prefer just the basic sacrifice for an alien idea rather than sacrifice for a facehugger which can then become a xenomorph of whatever it attacks first.

@Douzeju: Yes, it is an interesting indie game concept, which exists, and is pretty fun.

Edit: Making low res pics of things with 8 legs is hard. :( Even though I think putting it in would be too much work, I made a mockup anyways, because I was bored.

  • Oh, hey, me and my friend discussed what we thought would be a cool version of this special we're hypothesizing. So the idea was, don't give Ripley an active special. That sounds silly, and maybe it is, but here's what you'd get from that... So, first of all, this idea isn't entirely canonical within the Aliens universe, but it's just an idea I thought'd be cool: No active special, but when you die, as long as there's still a corpse, a chestburster breaks out of her chest and turns into a full-grown Xenomorph. Now, from here, I'd have a couple suggestions that I think would make it worth it. A. You control the Xenomorph for 15 seconds, until some miscellaneous thing happens, and you can no longer use him. (I'd think that he dies, but I can think no way to justify this.) Another option that makes more sense canonically, but that I don't think would work too well as an actual power, the Xenomorph ISN'T controlled, and simply goes on a rampage, killing anything and everything relatively near where you died. It would jump, climb walls, and have a basic melee attack. It would take several bullets before dying. It would die simply from getting shot by mooks, but you may have to kill it yourself when you reach it. I guess it might make sense for mooks to be scared of it when they're too close, but then it'd be notably harder for mooks to kill it. Although I prefer the first, I think both versions seem cool.
  • The 2nd Option sounds Great !!!

"Xenomorph ISN'T controlled, and simply goes on a rampage, killing anything and everything relatively near where you died" - and you have to kill it when you reach it...

    Great...

The bit where you have to kill it yourself is cool :D But only if you respawn as another bro immediately after (as normal) or else it takes away play time from the player who had Ripley :) Go kill it! :)

Could be super fun if balanced right :)

  • Also, if that doesn't work, her special could be switching between the rifle and the flamethrower, both of which would be a little bit weaker and a little bit different from similar weapons, to make up for the fact that you have two weapons. Just an idea. Or, you know, since I remember one team member saying there's no such thing as an overpowered bro, you could do BOTH. :O

I like this one too ! You have very good ideas ! :D
But if this character will have the ability to switch weapons, I think it will lack some "epicness". Bros specials are always impressive things, that's why they're called "Specials" : seeing the special ability of Ripley will only cause the players to say "Cool." instead of "WHOOOOOAAAAAAA".

I feel like trying to balance weapons for an upcoming update of TF2. :p

PS: Oh and yes, I already knew the game "Parasite" ;)
    Thanked by 2DragonTech Tuism
  • True, Douzeju. Specials need to be epic, and my idea doesn't make the cut. Hm...
  • It's been 2 days you guys. I hate it when we stop discussing stuff. Someone should suggest something. Or, like, 5 things.
    *pause and think*
I think there should be revisions to Walker's special and Snake's attack. As someone said, as the rifleman he should have the longest shot, and Walker's special has pretty limited use. Not saying it's a terrible special that I can never use, it's just it's the only special that can't help you at all in certain areas, those being any underground. Don't know if that's even something that can be helped, I just thought I'd mention it.
  • Okay, let's talk about the level editor, shall we?
  • Is the level editor already released if you bought Broforce ?

Yeah... yeah i'm sorry i haven't already bought your game. It's because of Paypal/Google pay/whatever payment platform, i don't like using these tools.
  • @Douzeju
Not yet, but seems that it will be soon. I think Free Lives has the level editor in mind in a somewhat Little Big Planet 2 form. I don't know if this sounds good, but I kind of hope we can design our own bosses, though I have no idea how it could be done.

Also, some time ago, I thought of an idea about weapon parts that add up to a set and unlocks a new weapon for a bro. This might propell players to explore the map, and give a sense of achievement.
  • Efff achievement! Need more Terrorists! Special ones... like Brolo (check last page) and whoever.

And the weapons were discussed 54389 times. With Snakes Sniper it would be nice if the bullet would explode (also was mentioned before) or something, 2-4 squares damage or something.

Walker's Special is nice, always fun times to get your Bros killed :) Maybe replace the Flash Grenade with a Flare or something so that everybody remembers that it's not a grenade but an Air Strike call.

Alien Bustin' Ripley was and IS a GREAT IDEA!

More Levels... no matter how many... put some levels there and release the damn Closed Beta Alpha Death Race/Match! We're waiting for that for more than 1 Year now! Hope we will be able to play online with our Bros that one!

And... many more... Someone should check the damn last 20 pages and make a resume of all the Good Ideas... Especially mines were good ones... Or the ones I approved.

  • @Killeru I personally think bros and terrorists can wait, because they don't really play the part of shaping the game, but more of a part of the game, while the weapons' part might be another new game mechanic. Maybe bros will get more exaggerated and powerful and good looking guns after they collect enough parts.
Although bros to me aren't important, I definitely want to suggest a Free Lives Bro, who fires neon coloured bullets which change colour all the time. And has a special that allows him to shout aloud FREE LIVES!!! and all the terrorists side with him joyfully after hearing it.
  • BY JEBUS @epicfailnot "I personally think bros and terrorists can wait" ?!?!?! WHAT?!?!?! ... Damn... You go and tell them to their face that! Tell'em to their face... IF YOU DARE!
  • edited
@Killeru That was just my opinion... No need for such a big reaction. We all want to keep this discussion peaceful, don't we?
  • edited
@epicfailnot Killeru is filled with manly passion. I don't think he means to not be peaceful.

@epicfailnot If you aren't as excited by new enemies and new bros, then are you more interested in new areas and settings then? I mean, are you keen to see more progress on the story, rather than more variety in the current brototype?

Or are you excited by the other features we're trying to get out (like Level Editor and Deathmatch and Online Multiplayer) ?

(We're going to be working on new enemies and new bros, as well as other things, but it is useful to know what players would like next).
  • @ ALL... manly passion... yeah... lots of it! I just see red when people want to let the Terrorists win!
  • I'm pretty excited for deathmatch!
  • I look forward to the new areas and scenes and stuff more. And I really look forward to the jungle scene having waterfalls, because I saw how beautifal it'd be when you worked on the HD gaphics :D
  • Have you thought about putting the game up as Early Access on Steam? Just thought about it earlier after seeing that Prison Architect, which is up there for sale, is actually still in alpha.
  • closed beta always wants people to have it more...and please keep the pixel art style!
    really fantastic game

We did some testing today of the Deathmatch (at the Amaze festival). There's a few glaring things that hurt the experience and need some tweaking... but it's not as confusing as it was and the fun is starting to shine through.

I think we'll be able to share that in a couple days after we get back from Johannesburg.

Do you mean share as in "show you guys a video", "add local deathmatch to the prototype", "begin beta and add online deathmatch", or something else?
  • "begin beta and add online deathmatch"

@DragonTech ... Share the deathmatch mode with our beta backers.

Okie dokie, just checking, sorry if that should have been clear. And raithza, sorry, that's what I meant for the second one. Glad to hear we're going to see deathmatch so soon, now I can show my brother once and for all that I'm better at this than him. ;)
  • Last night's Broforce Deathmatch showdowns was damn fantastic :D Thanks Simon for Vining this thing, I gotta get used to this Vine thing :)

  • Oh, Rami was there? I saw him last week at PAX. Vlambeer's games are great.
  • And did you get the promised High Five?

    Guess no High Fives...

Merica! Where the Death Match Link at?
  • There were many high fives! (including elaborate, semi secret, mostly embarrassing prototype ones)

In theory... The death match is included within the Humble Bundle download. (There should be a Broforce download associated with each account now).

I'm not 100% sure myself... but the Humble guy said that the link was up.

There is no link in my efffin mail...

Edit: Scratch that, I found it in that in that confirmation mail... But WHERE IS DEATH MATCH ONLINE ?!?!?!?!?!

Also... What's up with the low-rez mail banner? :P Your logo is so shiny and badass! Don't do it disservice! :P

@Tuism ... Oh noes, that looks awful!

@Killeru Online will come, but it's a lot more difficult for us.

So, a few things that I noticed on the beta so far. First, when I try to set up keys, it's invisible.
image I can still do it, and I here the effects when I set each key, but I can't see what I'm setting up. Only reason I know how is from memory. Next, after I try to set up keys, it tells me...
    image

Edit: Also, as I played through, although I can't properly show a screenshot, as I move around, to overlapping dead tanks didn't know which one should be in front, and it kept on switching as I moved.
Also, the glitch where the special indicator reads 5 sometimes for characters with 1, 2, or 3 is still happening, FYI.
Waiting on someone to play Deathmatch with, but I'll get back to you when I do.
  • I got the newsletter, but there was no link to the beta on the e-mail. Where can I download it?
  • @Ade - Hey man, check my upper comment, open your confirmation mail and go to that Humble page, it will be there.
  • Yikes! We're going to fix those things and make another update on Friday. This time with instructions, and also with some new levels.
  • Jarred is doing more concept work on the Brofort:

  • I want my very own Brofort.
