  • I can actually make it to this one! :D
  • I will be there! As usual
  • first post needs a tweak, we're in September now

So let's start populating the schedule: Who's got demos to show? Anyone found some awesome videos recently?

I could give my "Stuff we should fucking stop doing" talk that I did at AMAZE for the CT crowd that couldn't make it up for the festival, but I don't know if it's fair to force Evan and co through it all over again ;)

I've also got a physical game that I'd like feedback on, but I have no idea how to show that off at the meetup because it requires drawing on the floor with chalk...

    Thanks, fixed :)

We could get lots of cardboard or something and paint it black? (for the floor drawing)

I'm happy to here about the things people should stop f*@king doing again :) It's a good talk to hear over and over again because when we meet someone who should stop f*@king doing something we need to KNOW they need to stop f*@king doing it, and have the words to back that up.

I could show some BROFORCE progress or Bevis could talk about the art or we could talk about Greenlight or something?

  • I'm not sure exactly how light it is at 18:30 but what about the carpark outside? Chalk comes off pretty easily with water (dunno if there's a tap or something outside...otherwise bring buckets :D).
  • Being a recent addition to the community here I think that that both Evan and Danny's talks are must-hears if you haven't yet. Although I felt that I've heard it before. Well, if you've even talked about getting into games with Danny at all you'd have heard the point of view. So I guess it depends on your crowd, is it a familiar crowd or a bunch of old hands?

If the latter, I would like to pitch that the old hands discuss a bit more on how to share info/knowledge/expertise among this community, and how we can knowledge base it and benefit all us local nutters :) I see that @edg3 is starting a wiki so I'm guessing that's part of it.

Is it by old hands for old hands, by old hands for noobs, or by old hands for everyone, if you get what I mean?

@D3zmodos I second the car park outside.

I agree with @Tuism, if we can I would love to hear about or actually hear the talks we missed at AMAZE if we haven't heard them before. (I really really want to try do this chalk gamedev thing and I want to know why everyone is saying "BOOM"!). I would also like to ask for a post-mortem/first hand experience talk of sorts from the people at AMAZE if anyone is willing. As you can probably tell I'm not very jealous at all about not going... damn student life.

I doubt I'll have time, but I would really like to do a post-compo version of my game from LudumDare using all the feedback I got from the last meetup. So maybe just maybe one-day I can show that off.

  • Seconding the talks - I'd love to hear them, as long as you guys don't mind doing them again!

Yea, I'm up for doing a talk if there aren't already too many speakers... Danny and Evan's talks are a must hear if you haven't already!
  • @bevis: Yes! Tell me about the art choices behind Broforce and the redesign :)
  • Who would be interested in a talk about content-driven vs. mechanics-driven game design? Pretty relevant for game prototyping considerations. Would reference a balance of personal projects (Desktop Dungeons, Variance, some prototypes that never saw the light of day) and existing titles with varying scopes (Skyrim, Defender's Quest, Spelunky).

I would also find some excuse to mention BroForce, so Free Lives doesn't have to feel guilty about flogging it themselves. (Got your back, bro)
  • @Nandrew I am actually tempted to come down to CT just for that talk!
  • Nandrew that topic +98 :)

Seriously, would you guys record thee talks? In fact, what happened with the recordings of the Amaze talks?

It'd be sweet to see the Ludum Dare entries and post-mortems. It'd be a good chance for feedback for the participants as well.

Also: Awesome about Nandrew shamelessly promoting our game for us! (Plus his talk... that's a very interesting topic sir)

Also def attending, also also def want to hear ALL the talks
    Thanked by 1creative630
  • Missed last month. Defnitely here this month. Just the possibitly of hearing the talks excites me. In future I plan to give my share. I just feel really novice-esque right now.
Also @dislekcia the chalk game is killing me with anticipation
    Thanks in advance to MXIT
  • I've never been to one of these before, but I'd like to attend.

    Feel free! Everyone's welcome :)
  • Count me in!
  • I'll hopefully have prototype of my boardgame ready by then :) I'll bring it along in case I can fool persuade people to play :)

  • I'd like to hear @Nandrew's talk, sounds interesting. I'll be there.
  • In an unexpected turn of events, it seems like I'll be present for the ct meetup :) in fact I'm here already.

@dislekcia When are we board gaming? My first (super rough) prototype of asylum is getting printed today :)
  • Hey @Tuism, maybe you can get them to record it this time.

    :P :P :P :P :P
  • Hey ct guys, can you record the meets this time? :p :p :p :p

Srsly though, I can't record the whole thing on my iPhone (what if it rings) and have no other equipment to record with, can someone manage a camera, a power cable for it, and some duct tape to spider-web it to a secure recording location?
  • On that note: remember duct tape is your friend, masking tape it not.

I'll be there; if there is time, I would like to do a 5min demo of my game: savingxena.com
  • Yay! Game demos are always sweet!
  • 5min demo of my game: savingxena.com
I guess saving "private" xena would have had a slightly different meaning :p
  • Yes let's film it and take pics. I can get the camera anyone tripod?
  • @Tuism, lol, yea.. no secret where the name (Saving Xena) came from!
  • I've edited the OP with a provisional schedule to at least start taking a stab at getting ready for next week's meetup. Talks should be 20 minutes or less (I know that the AMAZE talks were designed for that timescale, so we're good there), just want to know if we have enough time for all 4 talks - I can easily not redo mine ;)

Have I left out any demos? @creative630, are you going to be showing something? I couldn't tell from your post...

Should I be doing that talk again? I mean it's more polished than before, and I kind of changed the content, but I have done it before for the Cape Town developers... ? And if there is a shortage of time...

Also. @Bevis said his talk is going to be fairly light. He's under a lot of pressure at work right now, so it's going to probably be more show and tell than tips and tricks.

Oh Shit! Moar Broforce! (plus my computer blew up today so I'm making excuses early).
  • @shelton

You got a power cable for it too? I don't have anything here unfortunately do lets see who has a tripod. Otherwise in jozi we used a lot of tape and it was spiderman style camerawork :)
  • We will try bring a tripod... no guarantees it'll fit.
  • @tuism @blackShipsFillTheSky its a digital camera and I got two batteries which I will both full charge. If anyone wants to bring along an SD card I have an 8gig. I didn't calculate video time but I know hd vids can become massive

  • @shelton I haven't a clue how big your files would be,mould you mind doing a test to see how big say a 5 minute video is? Film some tv or something, and see how big the file comes to? So maybe we might record lower non hd video if there's not enough space. Rather get more than get higher res.
  • Sure I'm not home now but will test later and report

I really don't think I should do the "The Totally Mathematically Indisputable Algorithm for Guaranteed Win (with colour enhanced explosions)" talk again.

But I'd like to do a talk about feedback loops next month (because I think it's weird and interesting and obvious and somehow we all do it horribly wrong at some point).
  • Roar! I'm in!!! :)
  • Ok, so no tTMIAfGW(wcee) this time around. Editing the OP :)
  • Ok guys here's my report
    I tested and 5min is 384mb.
So I cleared everything off the card and these are the results

    720fine-1280x720: 99mins
    720std-1280x720 standard: 145mins
    Vga: 291mins

    I think that's gr8 shooting time plus I have a backup battery

  • Cool, thanks :D I think VGA will do us just fine :) if we manage it we can save some time between talks and even not have to cut the vids up afterwards to talks :)

    Thanks @shelton :)

  • Hi guys.
Is anyone going back to town/gardens after the meet up? If anyone could let me hitch a ride back I'd really appreciate it.
    Peace
    Jeff
  • Hoping to make this one.
  • Dmt, and there I miss another one!
