[boardgame] Dubai - A fast trading game for 2-6 stock manipulating, profit-taking architects

edited in General
Print and play available here, there's a full colour as well as a low-ink version:

A card game with set-collection mechanics and stock manipulation, working on balancing at the moment :) It surprised myself with equal parts simplicity and complexity all at once :)

I've played it a few times with a few different crowds, and each experience has been different as everyone went for different strategies, which worked out and not in different measures, which has been pretty rad :)

Find the Print & Play here:

A couple of updates later, we're now on v0.4, with a pretty big new addition: Events!
The way it's implemented is a pretty neat (even if I do say so myself) balance of random chance and predictability :)

The game is also now renamed Dubai:

And there's a bunch of rule changes to streamline and balance the game :)

  • Have you ever considered doing a digital version of this? We play trivial pursuit on the XBOX when friends come over and it works pretty well.
  • Yeah, when I make boardgames I consider how it might translate digitally. Some games work better digital than others, Trivial Pursuit has zero hidden information, and it just has a question/answer mechanic, so it fits well. A couple of other boardgames also have digital versions, some work better than others. This one can work too, it just has hidden information so one-screen doesn't really work without maybe a pass-and-play on iPad. I'll consider that once it's solid and I know it's something with legs other than "I like it myself" :)

A game called Splendor works great on iPad because there's no hidden information, everyone can look at the screen all the time.

I've been working on a concept iPad boardgame where it's pass and play, but people have things to talk about/discuss between their turns. It's a theory right now and it's hard to make fun because it's pretty much uncharted territory.
  • @Tuism maybe talk to Joon? He might have some neat way of linking some phones and a tablet together so there would be a private and communal game areas.
  • Looks really interesting, can you elaborate on the "End Of Round" rules please?

Not sure how it works if board is cleared every round.
  • @boysano thanks for jumping in! Have you read the rule book through? Is that not clear enough to understand the End of Phase bit?

The image up there isn't the full rules, that's just the overview, if you're interested I'd suggest you follow the link to read that, I want to refrain from answering here because I want to test the rules as written as opposed to me casually explaining them.

(I link there because it's better to centralize my Links so I don't end up with too many different links to different files over time.)

(I had changed the terminology from round to phase since making that image, I'll put a more up-to-date one up when I can!)
  • Sorry just read the overview in OP original post.

  • @Tuism, if you ever did want to connect different devices up I'd be happy to help/give advice/etc.

  • Experimenting with art direction :)

  • Two things!

    1. I entered Dubai into Cardboard Edison's award for unpublished games, and an entry video was a requirement...

So here's a video of me sounding very awkward explaining Dubai's mechanics:

    2. Revamped the rules to be easier to digest - placed it riiiight there on top of the page, first post.

As always, Print and play files are here:

Feedback, crit, everything welcome and wanted :)
  • Ah! Wish I'd known about this competition!

    Good luck!
  • Oh rats, I should have shared it, it was on BGG, I subscribe to the design contest subforum... There's another one for a bit later, the KBG (Korean) competition (I entered this one with Cartel previously). Interested?

I should really spend more time on BGG. Please do share all comps here though :) would I be able to enter the Korean competition?

  • Back on topic, a company has shown interest in publishing Dubai, don't wanna jinx it (though I don't believe in jinxing things) so won't go into details, but that's pretty exciting :)

Over the weekend had a playtest that revealed on cool trick to improve the game - change the building's slant direction to the left - that'd immediately make it easier to see their colour in hand without the need for the top left icon (assuming traditional fanning direction) as well as make it easier to build from hand - you'll see what I mean when you play it :P

    RADDEST :D
  • Looks interesting! Good first video too :) I don't think you came across as awkward!

  • Happy to announce that Dubai is a finalist in the Cardboard Edison Awards!

    http://cardboardedison.com/award

11 finalists, about 110 entries. Stoked! Excite! :D

I'm now working on some changes and updates to make sure a physical prototype reaches the States before 9 March.

Who has time to playtest? :D
    image
  • I do. Never played though.
    Thanked by 1Tuism
  • If we can organise some playtest time I'll feed everyone pizza XD

  • Any updates on this?

  • Thanks for the interest in this! I haven't really made much in the way of progress on this, but I really should as it's the last hurdle before I can call it finished...

    ... But I don't know what to add/change XD

    ... it's the last 5% that'd take 95% of the time... XD

  • Just want to say the stacking of cards isometrically to form the skyscrapers is really clever :)

    Its looking great.
