  • We need to get on top of the venue for this... Miaow is no longer available for meetups, so we have to find an alternative.

  • Ola people,

We had a nice chat with Robbie at EGE Expo and have offered the audience hall at Friends of Design for all upcoming community meet-ups, free of charge. We feel really strong about supporting the local game dev community and try to assist where we can. The meet-ups also blend in really nicely with our bi-annual game industry days held by Lars Espeter.

Our venue offers seating for up to 150 people, complete AV set-up with 2 interlinked projectors, wireless mic, speakers, aircon, cafe/bar for drinks and catering. Additionally our campus offers the access to classrooms for hands-on sessions or possible indy game launches (just putting some ideas out).

The venue is located very central in 186 Bree Street, with easy access to MyCity bus routes and plenty of parking after hours.

I'm attaching a picture of the venue during an event, so that you can get an idea.
Now the most pressing question: Yes we can host you next week already (in case you haven't found an alternative yet).

You can get in touch with me to check out the venue in person, if you wish. Let me know if we can help.

    Cheers Philipp

  • That looks awesome! :)
  • That venue looks glorious. Can we take steps to confirm it and let everyone know?
  • That venue looks great. Thanks @ContentAwarePhil !
  • Thanks Phil. It's definitely on the list of options. Myself and @dislekcia are going to look at the venue Marco suggested this Saturday and then we should be able to let everyone know what decisions have been made.

  • I've just started a separate thread for the Game Industry Education Discussion so as to not clutter up this one:

Okay, thank you to everyone who has offered or suggested venues.

Venue for this month has been confirmed as the Space Theatre @ 22Seven : 60 Hout St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town

We do need a Mac laptop in order to have presentations on the theatre screen - if someone could bring that through?
  • I can bring my mac along, although I've never done any presentations on it, so I don't know what software people might need? I also don't have any adapters.

So yeah, maybe some other people bring theirs along as well as a precaution.
  • We have organised a Mac, now, I believe. All people who are doing presentations and would like the presentation to actually appear on the theatre screen will need to send me the prezzies via email by 4pm on Wednesday.

I reckon bring yours just in case? Also, probably all we'll need is powerpoint and at least one functional browser. It's up to anyone doing something strange to figure out their format well in advance :)

  • Great stuff, cool to hear a new venue's sorted!

Is the Space Theatre in the tall dark-grey building on the corner of Hope and Long Street (2 buildings along from the Grand Daddy)?
  • @Gibbo - All buildings in town look tall and grey to me :P Just look for the "60" above the door and buzz for 22Seven. Someone will be there from 5.
  • That sounds good, glad we have a great venue. Thanks to @dammit for all the organising :)

Does the venue only have some proprietary Mac interface for the projector? If someone wants to show a game and has their non-Mac laptop, wouldn't they be able to do a focussed feedback with the projector? I'm not too worried about this time cause we don't have any requests for focussed feedback yet, and personally it won't really be an issue, but I could foresee it being an issue in the long term.
  • @Francoisvn - Valid point. We're trying out 22Seven but it's not necessarily going to be a long term solution. It's our solution for this month. I'm not sure we will have any way to do focused feedback because it does require some set up (or otherwise, sending me a dropbox link before 4pm etc).
  • Ok cool, this month will give us a good opportunity to evaluate the long-term-iness of the venue. Perhaps once we see the projector setup we figure out something that works well for focussed feedback :)
  • Just a reminder to all the people who will be talking at the event to get their presentations to either @dammit or myself before midday tomorrow pls!

The hardware setup is alien as hell ;)
  • Apologies for completely off topic post but,

If Macs can hack alien motherships I think you'll be fine ;)

  • Damn peeps, sorry for last minute lameness but I've beens truck by plague today. I'm no good for presenting. :(
  • Sorry to hear it @Nandrew :(

Another reminder to anyone else doing presentations: get it to myself or @dislekcia today before 4pm.
  • Shit if loadshedding reaches stage 2 today, I believe the CBD will be hit 6pm-8:30pm.

It shouldn't be a problem - they've never been shed before when area 7 was without power.
  • Ugh. My car battery seems completely dead. Engine, central locking, nothing works. :/
  • Thanks for the great input tonight :)

  • Thanks to everyone who came through last night. And special thanks to Ben for putting together such a great talk for us at the last possible minute :)

Also, anyone who wants to get in touch with me to do some talks at schools in future - please DM me :) Also, @NickCuthbert good on you for taking on this massive and very brave project ;) Seems like you'll have a lot of support from the community though so don't forget to make use of those resources.

  • Yeah, great meet up everyone! Very stoked for the new venue; if we can iron out the projector kinks it feels like it could be a perfect home for us!

I thought the last part of the night was really great. First time I've been at a meetup that's involved so much thought and discussion from everyone. So many interesting ideas and perspectives came through.

Very, very excited for your new undertaking @NickCuthbert. I get the sense many others felt just as enthused about what you're planning to do!

To follow up on the stuff I suggested you check out; here's an intro to The Love Punks and here's their game. I think the emphasis here was very much on teaching kids about the visual sides of game design (rather than coding) but I think it's a really stellar example of the power of pooling the creative energy of kids. I can imagine it's a great feeling for them, working together to make something like this, and getting an opportunity to tell their own stories in their own ways.

On the flipside, here's Marrion Walton's "Creative Code" project, which looks to be doing really great work in giving kids an introduction to programming and making their own games.

High-five again for this undertaking Nick - it's going to be great!
