  • Microsoft as a jam venue for Jo'burg?
  • We were discussing that here:
    http://makegamessa.com/discussion/2324/event-ld30-joburgers-august-22nd-25th#Item_3

Though I think it's not going to be possible as @edge3 Ernest isn't going to be able to be there for the duration...

    Ernest? Comment here? :)
  • How does it work?
Do you people form one big team... small teams etc.?
  • Wow didn't know this forum existed. Maybe in the next LD, we will be able to form a local group. Currently collaborating with a few foreigners for #LD48
  • @Crocopede it works however people want to - LD has an individual and team thing.

The Individual one is called LD compo, the LD team thing is called the Jam. The compo is more strict, 48 hours, all work must be your own. The Jam is more relaxed, 72 hours, you can go in a team.

    Full details here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/rules/

Locally last time we got a venue and jammed together - doesn't mean everyone was a team, just that we could discuss things and be in a space together, and that was awesome. Would be nice if we can get that going...
  • Something I've been wondering about is: compo vs jam.

If you want to take part as a team or do anything else that precludes you from the compo, then there is obviously no choice.

However, if you satisfy the conditions for the compo, you could enter you game in the jam instead and get a few more hours to work on it. So I guess my question is: What are the advantages to submitting to the compo? More exposure? Better feedback?
  • Compo is much more prolific, it's tighter and gets more eyes on it cos of the Western notion of "heroism" - it's much more impressive if something is impressive and made by one person, rather than a bunch of people :P

Basically it's a smaller hoop that's on fire, as opposed to the jam which is a bigger hoop with more room for error.

But ultimately, a good game is a good game :)
  • @Tuism: Thanks, that's pretty much what I figured, but I just wanted to check I wasn't missing something more important.
  • Yo gang.

@creative630 and I are pretty stoked to team up and create a Jam entry for the event.

Any other Cape Town people thinking of doing something?
  • Ok so does someone want to collaborate with me on something? I can codez...

Anyway you can either pm me or contact me at kobusvdwalt9@gmail.com
  • Misread theme as "Connected Words". Probably making a word game now...
  • im curious though. What is taken into consideration when selecting a good game. Gameplay, concept, art, sound etc.
  • @Crocopede I've only done Ludum Dare once before, #26 jam. Afaik users rate on another's games based on categories. Last time I took part, the categories were Fun, Theme, Overall, Graphics, Mood, Innovation, Audio and Coolness. Users scored one another between 0.0 and 5.0 for each of these categories.
  • @BenJets and I are jamming jamming jamming!

Thanks to @BenJets for the writeup!
  • And with a little more than a day left till the deadline, here's the follow-up to that:

Unrelated to LD48, but I was also making a game last night :P
  • We're jamming, although I have to be at work today :P

This is the progress so far: http://indiesquish.com/ld30/

  • HOLY MOTHER COW DUDE THAT LOOKS INCREDIBLE!!!

This whole mining minecraft for assets thing is amazing, is there a standard... API... type thing that makes it work? Or is it super involved? Colour me INTERESTED! :D

It's not too involved. I use a Java program called Jmc2obj to convert parts of the Minecraft world to .obj format and then convert that to .fbx in Blender for use in Unity3D.

There are other ways of maxing voxel art. A nice one to toy with is MagicaVoxel http://voxel.codeplex.com/

Our choice to use Minecraft is because it allows us to build stuff as a community. Between 20 and 30 kids showed up to help build this weekend, so that has been good. :)
  • Of course! :D The community of minecraft is amazing and it's a great for non-technical people "engine" to make stuff anyway :) thanks for the info! I'll look into it! :D
  • It gets the kids involved with making games too, and demonstrates to their parents that they're not just wasting away their time playing Minecraft :D One of our builders mentioned to his dad that he was helping us make game assets and showed him our progress page - his dad actually remembers playing Zaxxon and got interested in it himself then. ^.^

  • So the three of us at Clockwork Acorn took part in the compo this weekend. Here are our games:

Neon Highway by me: LD entry (MGSA thread)
Trading Strategy by @Ramperkash: LD entry
    SpellChain by @Riocide: LD entry
  • Here's Star-crossed Lovers, the inter-stellar dating sim @Creative630 and I whipped up! Give it a spin and let us know what you think of SCL on the MGSA thread for it!

Looking forward to playing everyone else's submissions! Great that so many came through from the community!
