  • Hi! Welcome!

Here's our FAQ which comes highly recommended for all newcomers, it's really good and will answer many of your questions!

And also on that, we got a team here called Team Clash working on a metal themed brawler - there's already some cool progress, but I don't think there's been posts here yet. They've showed off stuff at our talks, so you should definitely get in touch with Team Clash :)

    Team Clash? :)

I have a great game idea! How do I get it made?
We are all here because we want to see our ideas come into fruition. Unfortunately, ideas by themselves aren't worth much (if anything). On top of that, everybody has their own awesome ideas that they are working on. This means that unless you have something else to bring to the table, enough to convince people that they should be working on YOUR idea and not their own, you will have to make your own game. Anyone who has followed game development online for any amount of time has seen hundreds of 'projects' pop up where one person with little to no experience, knowledge or funds attempts to assemble a rag-tag band of internet superheroes who will shake the very foundations of modern gaming, with nothing going for them but dreams and the promises of revenue share. These projects all die out after a few weeks as people lose interest or become aware of the scope of what they are attempting.

I don't want to discourage you, but a good idea isn't really worth anything until its prototyped and proven to be fun (so other people know they won't be wasting their time). The best way to prove it would be for you to prototype something to show off (even if its a paper prototype you can play).

Starting with a plot/story is also in general not a great idea, check out this video(it explains it quite well)

I saw that you might come to the cape town meetup next week, so bring along a prototype of the game idea you have and we can all discuss where/how you can go from there.

  • sounds good, i still need a lift though the shoelace express wont take me that far
  • @creative630 I totally loved that! Those are such great points to make - a story isn't about this character or that thing, it's about the emotions that it conveys. The same for a game. Man I'm going to have to remember that.

    It's all about emotions!!!!
  • Or was that a Chinana?
  • @dislekcia LOL. Hmmm... after re-watching it I have to say its a Chinana (less banana more Chihuahua?)
  • @Tuism I feel it is always best to focus on the story that you can tell through the mechanics first... I'd say even deciding on emotions at the start is a bit too much structure.

I think the story that the player can actually play is the most moving (I feel). Emotions should arise out of the mechanics you implement, but forcing the mechanics to fit pre-conceived emotional goals can result in a compromised game.

I try to build gameplay with the goal of conveying an intrinsic narrative... When I'm successful that narrative does inspire emotions... And what I find is that the narrative that the game is telling evolves out of what the players are experiencing (I guess I mean I try to let their experiences guide me).

I say I "try". I don't think I've very good at it yet.

Papers Please is what I'd consider the finest example of story telling in games (at the moment).

Of course, intrinsic narrative is a special interest of mine. Other players want exposition (and even cutscenes). As a player I want to play the narrative and for the emotions to arise out of that play. That's my taste in games (so obviously it colours what I consider to be good story telling).

  • (To be clear, I thought the Extra Creditz video was really good, I didn't mean to imply in my previous post that their advice was bad... don't know if it came across like that)
