Marketing Your Indie Game Online - For Free

edited in General
Hey Guys

After watching the (really cool) video at the Cape Town meetup on Wednesday on how to approach popular YouTubers to help promote your indie game, I decided to approach the organisers and remind them that I actually have quite a lot of digital marketing knowledge* that I'd be happy to share with anyone interested. Naturally, they suggested that I create a presentation for you guys to share the kind of things I know about promoting stuff online (for free...and for not so free :P)

The question, of course, is whether that is a presentation you would want to listen to?

Always a good thing to talk about, I'd be interested :)

(Also, OMG, ads are scary O_O)
  • Same this side! Definitely something every indie developer needs to learn at some point
  • I don't think marketing for indie games can be talked about too much.

It's way to easy to expect success through sitting around waiting. Folks need to know what the competition is doing.
  • +1 for interest, though of course I'm in Jhb.

Any chance of getting game-industry-specific information?

  • When I do the presentation I will definitely focus on what indie-game designers should/could be doing rather than just marketing in general :)
  • Thank you for volunteering would definitely be a great presentation to have at the next meetup, particularly with an approach for how developers/designers can get online exposure without big budgets!
  • Sure thing - but I'm not a definite for the next meetup :) I might need more time as I'm preparing quite a number of presentations and doing side projects at the moment.
  • Hehe no worries, by next meetup I meant more along the lines of 'next meetup sometime in the future that you're willing to present at' ;)
  • So, I recently presented 3 lectures on Social Media Marketing Strategies and I've completed my SEO1 and Web Analytics exams so I should be qualified to give you guys a solid talk pretty soon. I'll start working on it and let you know which meet up it will be ready for :)
  • I'll be interested also thanks
  • *waves hands in the air frantically* Me please!
  • Would anyone be particularly opposed to their game's website and or social media account being used as an example? Looking at Desktop Dungeons and Thoopid in particular at the moment.
  • @dammit: Would love some critique on our site and social media presence! We should be rebooting the site itself soon, so crits and new ideas would be timely :)
  • I'm chiming in somewhat late (for which I apologise), but I'd like to add another vote of interest in the suggested talk. ^_^

  • Some more interesting stats concerning where marketing is going in 2014, for those who are interested.

  • @dammit, so we need to put a video on the MGSA homepage? Someone fire a camera at @Lexaquilla!
  • @Fengol, we technically have the youtube video feed ;) And I'm not quite sure it would work for us. But perhaps...
  • @dammit, just an introduction video about what MGSA is and why it's important. I'll just embed the video on the homepage.
  • @Fengol : I think that's great, but I would love to have that on the YouTube homepage. I would also start with the SEO before diving into video on the website :)
