Cricket Heroes

edited in General
So...uh...I've been bandying this game about for the better part of 3 years now. I finally decided to put up or shut up:

Gameplay video

It's a cricket simulation/arcade/management-abomination and it's almost done. If you get a second, give it squiz and let me know what you think.

Cheers
Kurt

PS - Dys, I finally took your advice and decided to try to sell this thing...

  • Please put up a gameplay video on your first post so I can add it to the rage2013 submission list
  • @aodendaal: thanks :) post edited...
  • Ah you guys used Buko Studios as well! They are great, really enjoy working with them.
    The game looks pretty rad.

In terms of gameplay, do you only manage or can you play as well?
  • hi Duncan, yeah buko studios do fantastic work! you can play, manage and simulate :)
  • Cool, busy downloading now! Will def's try it out!
  • Thanks, Duncan :)
  • Hey @kurtkz, welcome to the site :)

Wow you've put a lot of work into this, when did you go 3D?
  • Hi there guys, extremely new to game dev but as a friend of kurtk, I'm super excited to see him 'deliver' cricket heroes. Well done @kurtk.
  • I'd play that! looks amazing :)
  • @dis: Uhm, maybe 10 months ago? I had a little spare cash and decided to see where this would adventure would take me. So far it's left me with more cobwebs than cash in my wallet ;) I've sunk tons of time into the game over this period. I hope it pays off, but the biggest win for me right now is having something out there on the interwebs that people are playing.

    @escapecontrol: Thanks buddy ;)

@rodney: Thanks for the kind words :) You can give it a spin already if you like. The demo is on http://www.cricketheroes.co.za. The WIP manual is also there.
  • @kurtkz: Well, in terms of building a game to sell, there's a lot of stuff that's going to be quite different to a labor of love/interest. I'm really hoping that the fantasy cricket league that's using your algs is paying you for them, for instance!

I'm not super sure that I'd have gone 3D myself, I might have focused more on the fantasy league element of the game and gone for the sort of market that Championship Manager targets, but the cricket version of that - that's your core awesomeness in my eyes. 3D doesn't help me port the game to Mxit, for instance ;) The trick is always to be thinking of the value other people will see in the game and why they're playing it.
  • Yeah, I considered that but the overwhelming response from the players was always: "why is it not 3D"? I pushed back for as long as I could but eventually I caved. I'm really not sorry that I made the transition, though. I've learned TONS and the feedback so far has been pretty encouraging :)

I'll be leveraging the fantasy league element a little later this year. The small leagues that have been run recently was kind of a proof-of-concept for the bigger picture. My business partner and I will be kicking off a proper CL towards the end of this year ;)

It's funny that you mention Mxit - I'll probably target that as a delivery mechanism for the CL along with a web app and Cordoba-wrapped apps.

Wrt to payment for the CL that were run...uhm...PlanetCricket actually made a nominal payment. The leagues were short and there were no prizes involved. I figured it'd be easier to get exposure. That being said, the game does make it really easy for people to start their own leagues (without my help). If anything, my input was just to help them with formatting the output.

Still, lots of lessons have been learned this year and I still hold out hope that something will come of all this :)
  • Just an idea, not sure if you can directly advertise to superbru, but I think that would be a target market to approach :D
  • @duncanbellsa: I'd thought of approaching them, but I have no idea how to go about it? How do I lead in? :)
  • Just email them and be all "Hi, I make this thing, it's pretty awesome. Any chance we could partner up and do even more awesome things?" then see what response comes back.

No need to get complicated with it, just give them a URL and maybe add that you've got a couple of ideas but you'd like to hear if they have any first in the hope that you're thinking along the same lines.
    Thanked by 1duncanbellsa
  • @dis: Sometimes I just need a kick up the backside. I'll email them tonight and let you guys know what happens (if anything). Thanks for the advice ;)
  • Yeah, what dislekscia said :).
  • Hi all,

Cricket Heroes has been officially released - http://www.cricketheroes.co.za.

    Latest version: http://www.cricketheroes.co.za/Data/Full.zip

This one fixes the outstanding issues and includes a (experimental) Mac version (downloadable from the site). I'll try to put together a video tonight to show everyone the updates :)
