First Step in Making Games and HI !
Hi everyone !
My name is Ky, and Ive started on the journey to learn about making games, and am trying to decide where to start and what program to learn as I go along.
The two biggest options it seems is UNITY and GameMaker.
After chatting to a few friends, they all said UNITY because I would learn the harder one with more options, rather than learn something easier and more basic and then have to jump into 3D. Ive done a lot of Animation and 3D ( as its part of my job ) so I dont mind using 3d and needing to put in more work for a better end product. And obviously I can still jump back into 2D at any point.
Your thoughts ?
Also, HI !
Id like to be a part of any projects that may need my help. Im a graphic designer and animator. Also do Photography and Video projects. If you watch DSTV and M-Net you would have seen a lot of my work in the form of promos and branding. So if I can help out anywhere, Id be glad to ! :)

What part of making games are you looking to do? Designing mechanics? Make art for games? Everything?
Whelp, Im only starting to learn about coding games and all of that jazz, but aside from that, if its graphics in some form, then yeah, Im totally keen to help out. Dorianne mentioned UI's and such, but wherever I can help out. :)
I personally went and learned Game Maker, but basically anyone will tell you go for whatever you feel comfortable with, because what you'll learn is more the HOW to make a game than the HOW to use that particular tool.
Although the thought of re-learning Unity one day is very daunting to me as I'm still just learning the ins and outs of Game Maker.
That, and I never got into 3D, so it's a big leap for me if I wanted to jump into that. If you have 3D experience already you should get it in no time :) I think :)
High Five!
I think if you're planning on including 3D artwork then Unity *might* be a better option to be familiar with. Of course if you want to do 3D art for games then learning UDK could also be a possibility, I hear it's very artist friendly.
If you want to be building games and designing them yourself then Game Maker might help you get into that faster, though if you're keen to work in a team with programmer(s) on 3D games then Unity might be the better path.
I don't think either GameMaker or Unity or UDK are bad options. I program/design games in Unity myself, and enjoyed it a lot even when I was doing all the art myself, it's certainly the tool I personally prefer.

The piece of advice I'd like to give that I think is the most valuable for someone in your position is: Do Game Jams.
There's always programmers who need art at these things. Not every game turns into something brilliant of course, but it's a great way to get your art into a game and get experience, and it only costs a weekend. And it can be super fun!
And I'm glad to hear you're keen to put your art in South African games. We need more game artists!
Would love to see your portfolio.
Its very similar to creative things, where its not the program but the person and idea. I will most probably go into the harder one of UNITY since it is one of the more flexible ones in the long run. Obviously I know next to nothing about the other programs, I just know that UNITY has APP development and Augmented Reality features which Ive had to commission out of Unity Developers in the past.
But I would totally start off VERY basic, even if its simulated 2D just to get the hang of things first.
But on the art side of things, Im not much of an illustrator or such but Im a good designer and animator so, hey, wherever I can fit in, the for sure ! Heres a very rough idea ( old too ) of what Ive done before :
