Boilerplate for Games?

edited in General
Hey guys,

I had this idea last week, to create a standardised set of boilerplate templates for game developers.

Essentially, it would be the set of game templates rolled out across multiple platforms (GM, Unity, Construct, etc).
I had the weekend jams more in thinking, so instead of people re-writing their own engines every time there's a compo, they can just use one of the many templates offered.

They could be well documented, with the basic essential features spread out across them. For example, a platformer would include basic sprite animation, running jumping, jump through platforms and so on.

Do you guys think this would be worth a price tag? Or do you think it's not really worth the effort since you would prefer to be building your own engines anyway?

  • I'd be willing to help, would also be cool to add some common functions. Maybe in a wiki like device where the function's goals and features are listed, and how to implement them in GM, Unity, Construct, etc. Even if it's only initially populated with one platform's code, others may reverse engineer it for the platform they use and update the page.

I think it could also be a great place to get feedback on functions and how to optimize them.

I have a few templates and functions for Game Maker to overcome it's limitations in terms of sprites and objects in the free version, maybe someone else could find them useful?
