"What colour is 'slow'?" vfx talk

Pretty great intro talk, in case any of you are interested in making fx for games.

  • I haven't watched the video yet but I do find it pretty marvellous how as soon as I read the title I started visualising the colour blue. It's pretty amazing how our minds make these associations with such abstract concept.

I can't believe that in all game programming books I read it was never explained that some colors are faster than others. I feel I have been reaped off.

@IceCliff: My understanding is that our associations with colour are learned behaviour, and that these associations are dependent on your culture and location. "Blue" was actually one of the fx artists' answers, though there were other interesting ones too.

@SkinnyBoy: To be fair, this probably falls more under the realm of art than game programming. Even in the video, there's a much greater emphasis on communicating a designer's intent using visual feedback, rather than anything to do with programming or any specific implementation.

Your phrasing made it sound ridiculous and flippant, but this is a legitimate art/design problem. "There's a 'slow' debuff (or is it a buff?) that causes a character to move and attack slower. What should it look like? What shapes? What colour?"

    (Also haven't watched yet)
That is pretty interesting. I can see how blue could probably be slow, but in my mind I think it would be considered fast. Likely because of how much NFS I used to play, and I remember NOS being blue.

(Image search tells me that they used a bunch of different colors for NOS, but seems to be mostly blue/white/purples)
