Coming over for next GGJ

Hi All,

I am Samuli, a game dev from Finland. A few years ago I started travelling to different countries for each Global Game Jam. I have already done it in Finland, Taiwan, Belgium, Denmark & South Korea. For the next January I was thinking of coming to South Africa for GGJ. I heard you have a nice little community down there. I love game jams and have been doing one game a month challenge for four years, mostly by participating to various jams in Nordics, around web and like this, travelling around the globe!

Do you know who organized Cape Town GGJ this year? I'd like to get a confirmation that it will be held and that I can get in, before I order the plane tickets. :P

I think it would be waste to travel to Cape Town for just a weekend so I am planning on staying 1~2 weeks in total. I'd love to meet some of you from community during that time. If anyone has a spare sofa that I could crash on, I'd be happy to have a place to sleep for couple of nights. Airbnb/hotel/couchsurfing recommendations are welcome as well!

See you in January!

Hello and welcome! This year's GGJ in Cape Town was organised by a lecturer at the University of Cape Town whom I don't think is on the forums.

However you can probably follow up with @TheFuntastic, @francoisvn, @dammit or even @dislekcia to get more info.

I fear, however, it's still too early to tell what the plan is for GGJ '17

FYI, there was also a GGJ in Johannesburg, Pretoria and George

Yes! Come over to South Africa! We've had a GGJ here every year since 2009.

I think between the devs in Cape Town there's definitely a few couches to crash on! We even made this video about why you should come here!

We hold our monthly Cape Town community meetup on the last Wednesday of every month, so it might be worthwhile to arrive a day or two before that Wednesday (Wednesday the 25th). If you have any experience to share at that meetup I'm sure that'll be greatly appreciated (we love to hear what people are doing in far off lands).
  • I will definetly plan it so that I can attend the community meetup, thanks for the heads-up. I am always open for sharing my knowledge.

Thanks for the ggj info. Looks like it is pretty safe to order the flights soon, seems like your sites in the past accepted everyone. In some ggj sites there are hard limits because of the spaces, I almost didn't get into the site in Belgium because of those so I have grown to be a bit vary afterwards.
  • @Zhamul: Ditto what @EvanGreenwood said: come to GGJ and the meetup. I'm not sure what the plan for GGJ is yet, but you're very welcome! I'm sure we'll also be able to organise a couch for you between the local devs :)
    Thanked by 1pieter
