Who else is expecting an OUYA in the next couple of weeks?

So we are feeling pretty cautiously optimistic about this, but our OUYA is on the way and should be pumping out RED within the next week or so.

I'm keen to know who else will be getting one - we only have Unity Android standard, so I'm not entirely sure it will work 100% with the box (might have to cough up $1500 for pro in order to use the plugin >.< ), but we are going to try circumvent that somehow. AFAIK Tasty Poison is also getting involved..?

Overall it looks like a potentially beneficial market to move into. At the very least we could flog the devkit as a "collectors item" on ebay if it goes down the tube ;)

I'll be honest though - I'm desperately praying this works out OK. We have never taken a risk like this before, but here goes...

  • Wait, what's the risk that you're taking?

Is it the price of the OUYA itself - I don't remember it being that crazy expensive? Is it that you're not sure the game you're working on is going to be awesome (because there are totally ways to minimise that risk before you invest tons of time in a project)? Or is it that you're only aiming for the one platform instead of multiples?

I'm not personally convinced that the OUYA will work out - but if it does we'll port DD there easily enough. I think that you could aim to be an amazing launch game on the platform, but if your game is going to be great on a new platform it needs to be awesome elsewhere too. The unfortunate reality is that you're going to be competing with every other game team that has the skills/budget to port their game to the new system too.
  • Well, $699 for an 18 and 19 year old is a bit of an investment yeah :P

Red will be coming to iOS, OUYA and the Mac App Store, so there is no issue in terms of its distribution. Neither is the content poor or hard to sell. Its just that we want to make enough sales back through the OUYA platform to have a decent ROI. I'm hoping that the lack of games available in march will dictate some sort of revenue stream towards us if we get it out soon.

We'll most likely be fine on the other platforms, so if the OUYA ends up being a loss, at least we can generate an overall profit through other mediums. I guess I just have the usual near-release jitters.....
  • How is it $699? Wasn't it meant to be the $99 console? (or $199 with 2 controllers)
  • The OUYA costs only $99 + $20 for international shipping - http://www.ouya.tv/buyouya/ :D
  • Then why are you investing $699? What else are you getting?
  • @pjpdev however that is without a controller.
  • @edg3 Look at the order page, it says OUYA console + 1 Controller is $99. An extra controller will cost $30
  • From the Kickstarter:

    Pledge $699 or more
Developer Special. A first-run OUYA (already rooted so you can just get going), EARLY SDK ACCESS, an extra controller, and we'll help you get started. We'll also help you promote your game for ONE YEAR, and your games will be marked with a FOUNDER EMBLEM.
  • Well, we have it up and running - RED is currently being ported over but progress is quite slow. The SDK had a few errors but luckily the community is more than happy to help. thankfully it turns out you don't need pro to run the plugin :)

We'll post a vid or something in the next few days with a running build...

We've also got a "Developer Special". OUYA seems like a great platform for something like our Broforce (i.e. an easy to access market for a TV console with two controllers plugged in)

Though I have doubts obviously about OUYA, I'm a bit concerned that what we want to do is out of the scope of the hardware (or at least will make porting a big pain for us). I think we'll all be waiting and seeing what happens, and there are other Android based console options becoming available: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872297630/gamestick-the-most-portable-tv-games-console-ever (so squeezing into this space seems a good investment if you're prepared to maintain on a bunch of platforms).
