This is my progress so far. Wanted to try something with a bit of a story line (something I have never tried before). GTA2 like that comes to an unglorious conclusion after 7 minutes of game time.

See entries have been a bit slow in appearing. Hope it's just because everyone has been waiting for the upcoming weekend and public holiday to get going. Hope to see tons more games soon. I've heard a lot of you recently mention that you are not creating enough prototypes, play other's prototypes or give enough feedback. Perfect chance to change that don't you think? Do it for MGSA!!!

  • I have absolutely no idea what's going on based on those screenshots. :P Which, I dunno, might be pretty smart in terms of avoiding spoilers in a story-driven game. Looking forward to a build!

    Okay, so i'm done with the skeleton of my story line. Now I just need to flesh it out and make it cooler. Quite happy with the progress so far. Logically all the current art is final, I will just add to it. Ran into some performance issues with the android build, and since I am now scared that I will run out of time before solving the problems, i've decided to rather focus on getting it running on PC (where performance seems to be much better).

    The story line cut-scenes, takes it a bit over the theme, but the actual gameplay stays within the 7 minute restriction. That is if you play without any restarts :)

    The awesome score (and some of the SFX) was composed by @The_Sired_Ward (my go-to-guy for all things sound) - so please comment on that too. I am sure he will appreciate the feedback too.

    Actually turns out that I quite like the theme.

    And with out further delay here is the first playable build (WebGL - firefox recommended).

    All feedback will be appreciated.

    Oh yeah, you play with arrow keys - Enter/space to navigate menu buttons.

    I gave this a play, and I found the driving itself to be quite frustrating. Traffic starts moving the moment the lights change, so if you're driving at a green light, and the light instantly changes, you don't actually have time to slow down or correct before other cars start driving into the crossing. (There's a reason the world uses three lights instead of two!) Cars also change lanes or turn into you even if you were just going straight, and every time this happens you're forced to start over (aside from, say, just bouncing off, which would have been more forgiving). I basically just ended up restarting a whole lot for things that I felt I had no way of foreseeing.

    I understood from the initial instructions that I needed to press Spacebar to check my GPS, but that didn't seem to do anything. I realised later that there was text in the bottom middle of the screen that told me which street I was crossing intersections. (I restarted 3 times before I noticed that.) And then, even when I roughly knew where I was going, I restarted another ~5 times because of traffic turning into me, or lights changing suddenly.)

    For the "race", it takes a while for the camera to pan to where you are, which just means the other guy always gets a head start, and you end up losing until you know which direction you're heading to start with so you can drive blindly before the camera actually arrives at your location.

    I like that there's a narrative (from the little I played, it already feels a lot like older-school GTA), and I actually kind of like the janky, internet-cut-up art. I'm just finding the driving itself to be unsatisfying or unfair. I feel like it'd be better if a small collision (e.g. just touching a car while driving next to each other, or a car that's just started moving turning into your side) would just have you bounce off a little, and only bigger collisions (e.g. head on collisions, hitting a wall at high speed, being jack-knifed in an intersection) might be causes for a restart (and maybe not even then; maybe you're just knocked pretty far which would no doubt have an effect on your time).
  • @Elyaradine thanks for the valuable feedback. All your points are valid and I'll act on all the advice. Thanks for trying.

    Windows standalone (~30MB) on itch:
    https://fanieg.itch.io/my-plane-leaves-in-7

    So i've tried to implement all the changes suggested (except camera fix in races), so you can now:

    * Crash into other cars without forcing a restart.
    * All traffic lights can now also turn orange.
    * Cosmetic tweaks.
    * Control tweaks
    * AI tweaks.
    * Clearer tutorial
    * HUD tweaks
    * Skip cutscene buttons

    Had to go the standalone route as I was having too many issues with Unity's WebGL builds (sigh). So sorry for the download. As always all feedback will be appreciated.

    Some more screenies:

  • @FanieG Hey man love your game so far, could see myself playing it quite a bit since it has a mental side to it.

    However I could not get past the 5th Avenue and Balloon checkpoint as the cut-scene kept replaying, almost as if the OnTriggerEnter event kept triggering. So I was stuck in an infinite loop. This happens whether clicking skip or next, hence why I think it must be with the triggers.

    Hope you get it fixed soon so I can get to the rest of the content

    Thanks for the heads up @vince. New link added. Seems i am running into a lot of issues with Unity's new SceneManager. Driving me nuts.
  • @FanieG Hey the new version you uploaded fails to extract. Error says unexpected end of data. Maybe the upload corrupted? Just thought I'd let you know
  • Hi All,

    Anyone else unable to download and play this? Just downloaded from 2 PCs and they play on both. Anyone with the same issue as @vince?

    Feedback will be appreciated.
  • @FanieG Just tried again and it works fine now so might have been an error on my side. Played through the game now and enjoyed it a lot especially the ending.
    A few notes: The engine sound seems to cut out after driving full throttle, I don't know if it is intended but I found myself releasing throttle and pressing the key again just to get the sound back as it is quite satisfying haha.
    The mission to go to the mechanic was the one I struggled with the most, as I was about 1 car length away from the finish before time ran out, but I think this is fine as it adds some more difficulty.
    And for the last mission some ambient police sirens would go nicely ;)

    (If you can I would like to hear shortly how you did the AI cars)

    All in all I had fun
