Laptop Re-use Program

edited in General
So I've had this idea for a while, but always assumed it both already existed or that it wasn't very effective for a reason I couldn't percieve.

Most of us in development are pretty demanding of our machines, I'm also thinking of visual artists and animators, and when we upgrade our gear, often the last set isn't at the end of it's lifespan, just at the end of it's functional lifespan for us.

I envision a program that collects older tech from people like us and repurposes it for teaching less privileged or marginalized people.

I was wondering if anyone knew of an existing progrm like this, and in general, your thoughts.

I am seriously considering starting this if I can.

  • I really like the thought of this! The same applies to smartphones too!

I think more than artists, who are really small in number in SA, corporates and design studios should theoretically have an even bigger obsoletion rate.

I think the old hardware just gets passed down until they become pointless to maintain - for example I have a laptop that I took from someone that's literally broken in half and I just wanted to use it to build a lightbox (of course I haven't done it yet...). Or they end up at Cash Crusaders or the like. I dunno!

I personally haven't got anything other than the laptop I'm working on and my old PC which is my misc media station and the thing that I ran rAge on.

I wonder what other people's experience is with their hardware.
  • Your timing is spooky, I saw this announced yesterday: http://code4ct.com/laptop-donations/
