How to: Screenshots & gifs with your game!

edited in General
This is a general reminder to everyone, there's no reason not to maximise the attractiveness of your game to potential players/feedbackers/groupies :)

1. Post at least one or two screenshots with your game! It's pretty simple to do. Printscreen on a PC and paste into Paintbrush. On a Mac Cmd + Shift + 4, then draw a box or press space and click the window.

2. Post animated gif! This one's awesome if used well!
> Use the software of your choice to capture a video (PC - Fraps is good, OSX - just use Quicktime)
> Use licecap (http://www.cockos.com/licecap/) to capture a gif off the screen.
> Keep the file under 1mb - that means make the file dimension smaller would help. Or use Photoshop to resize/crop/whatever.
> Animated gifs share very well on twitter.

Please use these! They're really simple, and give people a much better "in" with your game than any wall of text or just a download link!

  • Thanks @Tuism. I posted the game now at work, and sometimes forget to do this. Good reminder.
Also that gif info is very useful!

    KThxBye! ^_^
  • Can highly recommend GifCam, found it much friendlier than LiceCap - and you don't need to make a video first. (Might be win only, can't remember)
Also for capturing vids - OBS (open broadcast software) is boss! Suffers from a confusing UI, but it's basically the VLC of screen capture software - aka stable, robust, and free!
