I want to start a indie dev team.

Hi my name is Fabian Els I am based in Gauteng Pretoria and I want to start a dev team. I am quite new at this so yes I'm wet behind the ears but I have made sure to make this my life meaning I have no job live at home 24/7 and barely sleep BUT that doesn't mean I slack off oh no I am currently learning a modeling software called zbrush and am making headway, I also hope to learn unity soon so that I can expand my horizons.

My goals are to form a team to help realize my vision for the many ideas in my head and eventually form a proper studio. I am using a wonderful site called digital tutors to further my skills in what I want to do and more. My idea of the perfect set up is to gather a group of like minded friends to do this with me and really make something of ourselves. Everyone's input would matter and we would accomplish things as a group and have fun while doing it. I also want to help in other projects too so it wouldn't just be about me in all this. It would be awesome if some rookies out there would like to join so you can grow with me and prosper. I really hope to make my dream a reality and I am deadly serious about it so I hope someone is interested!

Some examples of my skills so far. (Which are growing!)

  • Fantastic, keep investing in yourself and build your portfolio!
The best thing to have is a portfolio, before you put extra demands on yourself with running a studio.

Start helping others or other projects with your skills, but make sure you get credit and are allowed to blog about it and put it up on your online portfolio!

Then the next step is see if people will pay you for your skills, by selling models online and as you build reputation you can increase prices. Then in no time (1-3years) you will start getting too much work, and again you can increase your prices.

In this 1-3 years you will feel like it is a roll-a-coaster ride, of emotions and changes, but keep at it and keep testing what model works best for you and your dreams and desired lifestyle, until you get the break you need or figure out how you want to do what you want to do...

    Good luck!

I'm glad you have some examples of your skills up, but I think your title will be more suited to start a project rather than a team. It is easier to communicate a project, otherwise consider joining another project.

If you are the leader type and want to run the team, consider fleshing out a detail project people can get behind. It is important to plan, and a project is much easier to get behind and understand than just a team. Otherwise consider arranging a jam session, and just build relationships and the teams will fall in place after a year or so...

    Just my opinion.
  • I'm also another wanna be indie dev here, from pta..an indie studio could be an awesome idea..But all im good at is Unity.

That is the beauty of being an Indie ... leverage the tools that you are good with and familiar with and not ones that others try to push down your throats.

    If you try a tool and it doesn't work ... find another and move on ... use the right tool for the right job. 8-}

So what I see right now is an artist and a developer ... join forces and make something great. If it doesn't work out, than that is cool because you will have learnt during the process ... but like others have indicated, try make a project together first and worry about the studio second.

  • Before any of you start an indie team, please read the book E-Myth
    http://www.amazon.com/The-E-Myth-Revisited-Small-Businesses/dp/0887307280

Explains the different personality types in a business: Technical / Managerial / Entrepreneur and how to balance them, or supplement them.

It is important to acknowledge that most of use here are Technicians - so be very careful to jump into a business owner role, if you actually just want to make games.
  • I also live in Gauteng and I'm keen to do sound and music for any games. I also have an overactive mind to help with conceptual development.
