[Cape Town] The Big Box (Boardgame) Cafe

I got the chance to check out the Big Box Cafe this evening and I'm really excited that this place exists. It's a small, French-run venue with tables perfectly suited for boardgames. Right now, as they've just opened (and opened unexpectedly...there's a story there that the owners will happily tell you) they're still waiting for all their furniture and kitchen equipment to arrive which means there are only 3 small tables and a large table and they are currently serving simple food like soup and sandwiches. I'm told they'll have seating fro 30 people and will start serving French food once everything is set up :)

So, what do you need to know? This place is a great place to go hangout and try a whole bunch of games you've probably never heard of. The owners have also designed their own games which you have to try to - because they're rad!

Monday to Friday
08:00 to 16:00

Saturday
10:00 to 18:00

They're also open for events - so I believe once a month they have an all night boardgames day on a Saturday. Happening now. And this Friday there's wine tasting and boardgames.

Oh! And, they're happy to stay open for events free of charge if there are more than 10 people. I would love to organise a boardgame jam there sometime if we have enough people show interest :D

Otherwise, if you're heading there - let me know. I plan on becoming a regular ;)

  • Went along with @Dammit to check this place out today and had a blast! Definitely somewhere I'll be going back to, hopefully with prototypes in tow :)

One of the things I really liked is how the hosts' taste in games is so very different to the games I'm used to seeing. Sure, they like their euro boardgames and system-heavy things, but Eric was really good at putting a simple-looking quick thing in front of you and explaining how to play it in a flash. Got to play 3 new games that way today, each of them had a unique twist/interaction that made them feel very inspiration-y :)
