  • We have been selling tools in the asset store for almost 2 years (https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/publisher/3546).

They seem to wire money to any bank with a SWIFT code or IBAN number, so you can get your money paid into a South African account. However, they only pay quarterly, there is a minimum of $250 before they will pay, and the transaction fee is $20 on top of their 30%. I highly recommend getting Paypal and using that instead. The combined delays going the Paypal route is almost a month, but at least it is every month.

I can tell you a bit about our experience (although I cannot really say anything art specific).

The first thing is it is generally hard to get noticed. So while anything will at least have a trickling of sales, it may be hard to get enough to fund a project in a decent amount of time. If you make very nice and special, generally useful assets, this is of course much easier, but even then there is some luck involved. It will help if you already have a presence online.

Ratings are important. Again, with good assets it´s easier, but since Unity does not make it easy to reach your customers, it can be really difficult at the beginning when you only have a few customers. So it´s helpful to find a way for customers to come to you that you can later reach them. Use an email address where they can mail you, put up Facebook / Twitter. And then ask them. And above all, impress them. Customers are likely to rate high when you solve their problems quickly, add features (whatever that relates to in the art world) that they ask for, and so on. And of course if they are impressed with your work. And unhappy customers will be quick to give you a one star just because you did not respond to email, or something didn't work as expected.

Sales... So you can make a lot of money when you are on a sale, so apply to get on it. On the flip-side, we sometimes experience a dramatic drop in sales when Unity have one of their big sales that last several days. For us, this is the most frightful thing to happen.

Don't be scared to be expensive if the product is worth it. Choosing a price is difficult, especially since it is very hard to do experiments to figure out what the best price is. But don't think something will sell better just because it is cheaper. Your price also tells the customer how you see the asset - high quality, or crap. And generally, higher paying customers are more civil. Once you are up, and selling, and people are not complaining about the price, you are probably too low.

It is difficult to improve sales. We found that advertising does not work (although this may be quite different for art, so you may want to try it if you can). One thing that seems to work if we update frequently. I am not sure how this works, but it seems there is a correlation between updates and sales. (We tweet and post on Facebook with updates, but nothing more).
  • thanks for the info dude. I think I will try and get a pay pal account.
