  • Someone care to confirm Miao as a venue? :)
  • I'm interested in chatting about making stuff for non-gamers.

A good part of this talk would be of interest to people keen on developing content for parties like SFA. I would also want to include some thoughts on making games for people who are computer illiterate / struggle with English / have socio-cultural obstacles.
  • @LexAquillia , @Dislekcia, @dammit or any Cape Town person, please will you organise Miao as the venue for Wednesday. The Modern Alchemists meeting has not booked it for this month so it needs to be done our side.
  • Would it be possible to add an item to the agenda?
I'd like to start a discussion around education and games.
    Thanked by 2Boysano MNRosa

Could you explain that a bit more? Do you mean games that are educational, game industry education, education using games or something else entirely?

Sorry more specifically game industry education.

There is an organisation called Code4CT which has the aim of teaching girls from disadvantaged backgrounds to code. They organise a series of week long workshops work shops which are aimed to get these girls excited about coding and thereafter provide mentoring to help develop entrepreneurial and programming skills. At the moment the programme is very focused on web development, however I've been in contact with the founder of the course, and there may be an opportunity to develop follow up workshops which focus on games/interactive media.

More generally I've been thinking about game design at tertiary institutes. Is the course I'M doing valuable beyond CS skills.

So I'd like to ask the community about what they think is important in game design education.

  • I'm having a hard time contacting Maio. Has anyone else managed to get hold of them?
  • I'd be happy to do a quick feedback session on the Games for Change Festival I attended in NYC if anyone's keen to hear it

  • @Nandrew ugh, sad to be missing that talk!

@NickCuthbert sounds great! I would ask that to start the discussion you provide an introduction to the problem and perhaps pose a question to the audience to get the ball rolling. Sounds like a great discussion - something I think about greatly myself!

@MNRosa Would be great to hear about that :).
  • "Miao is not available but you can use Viva cafe our sister restaurant. Would you like to confirm? "
  • @dammit: any idea if Viva cafe has the space we need and a projector? I had a quick look at their website and it doesn't look super promising, but we seem to be rather short on options. I'm also happy to call them but I don't want to duplicate effort.

If Viva cafe have the stuff we need, I vote we confirm with them ASAP, cause time is running out.
  • Thanks @francoisvn - I've organised another venue, but it's up to the committee to decide if we'll take it or simply give this month a miss.
  • So everyone owes @dammit massive amounts of confectionery for hunting down venues and finding alternative places for the meetup to squirm into tomorrow. However, a full-on location change with only 1 day of warning doesn't seem like a good idea, especially not with EGE looming over the CT events schedule.

Bottom line: The CT Meetup is cancelled this month. Apologies (and could everyone hold onto their talks for next month, which should be at Miao again). Come to EGE.
  • Well that's disappointing. I was looking forward to the trek to CT to meetup with everyone :(
  • Well that's disappointing. I was looking forward to the trek to CT to meetup with everyone :(
If you want to organise an unofficial thing at like Percy's or something, go ahead ;)
  • @francoisvn: I would still be keen for some socialising , come through anyway!
  • Sounds like a plan. I'm keen on Percy's or this mystery place @dammit was so kind to organise. What are people's thoughts? Any other suggestions?
  • Can't make it :( I have to study for exams
  • Ok, so who's keen to meetup at Percy's this evening at 18:30? Everyone is welcome!

Some indication of who's interested would be great (don't wanna drive through from Stellies if nobody can make it), maybe <3 this post or reply if you're coming.

  • I can't make 18:30, but I could do 19:30. There's a launch stream thing that I'm going to try and be online for at 18:00.
  • Where is Percy's? Buitenkant Street?
  • @dislekcia: cool, see you later. Got some comments/bug reports on DD to pass on to someone.

I'll still aim to be there from about 18:30, but people are welcome to join later of course :)

Perseverance Tavern (Percy's) is on Buitenkant St indeed: https://www.google.co.za/maps/place/Perseverance+Tavern/@-33.93051,18.420858,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x1dcc677b925df075:0xd6c4045d1dc88375?hl=en

    Socialising is cancelled.

Seriously though, might also be late but I'll be there.

  • On the offchance y'all have one of these while I'm down in December, I'd love to attend.
  • @NickWiggill: the December meetup is usually precariously close to the festive holidays, so it is usually not held, but I'm sure we can figure something out :)

  • Thanks for the de-stress ahead of our launch, had a good time at Percy's :)

  • Hi guys. Not sure if anyone is going to see this comment but if not I'll repost it on the discussion about the next Cape Town meet up.
A new coffee shop has opened up in town called The Big Box Boardgames Cafe and they said they'd be happy to host a community meet up. The venue is not very big but it could work. Let me know if you want me to talk to them or if you want their contact details to arrange it.
    @dammit
    @bensonance
  • Ah that sounds awesome. Even just that it exists whether we use it for meet ups or not. You can pass on contact details to me if you like and I'll find I out what the plan is for this month since I think we may already have a venue
