  • Jonathon, might I suggest adding a list of projects you've worked on to the past. Also, have you ever worked on games before? I looked on your soundcloud page, but it seems to primarily music of a specific genre which you don't often see in games.
  • @JonathanBlom Best thing to do is listen to the soundtracks of video games and maybe get a book on music and sound effects for video games - it's not just a matter of being able to craft a beat.

Video game music needs to be adaptive, so it's a good idea to learn the different techniques to achieve changes in atmosphere, and how to segue one piece of music into another, and to avoid repetitiveness. And then there's also the emotive side of music, which is important with many video games.

It can be useful to also learn something like Wwise or FMOD, for audio implementation in games, as well as the basics of Unity to better appreciate how sounds work in games.

Create a portfolio of your work as you progress - there's a Portfolio section on the forum - and share your progress, experiences and ideas!
  • Thanks for the replies. I want to start by focusing on sound effects and I am working on making up a portfolio.
I'm just looking for like an internship or anything where I can learn more about music in the video games industry.

  • @Nuclear_Mosquito I added my soundcloud just to show I have made music before and that I have been in working in the music industry for a while. I am working on a portfolio that i should have up in a couple weeks.
  • @JonathanBlom I understand your original post a lot better now that you have changed the title. I wish you the best of luck. Unfortunately I can't offer you an internship or a job, as I'm only a novice game developer and designer, but feel free to ask me for feedback (I sometimes have a good eye for detail). I'd be more than willing to help.
  • @Nuclear_Mosquito No problem. Thank you for replying. If you ever need any sound effects or music you can contact me and i'll be more than happy to help, even if it is for free. That will definitely help my portfolio.

  • I would also suggest that you find a prototype in need of music and make some stuff for it. Even if it is crappy and the developer doesnt use it in the end, you will get a lot better by actualy trying to make something.

I have a prototype called knife fight that i am working on that doesn't have sound atm.
  • @JonathanBlom - we also have sound designing competitions every now and again on the forums, which are a great way to practise making music and sound within a specific gaming context, so keep an eye out for the next one!
