Which art-designer..

Hey guys, I want to start a new project,I'am thinking on the lines of a turn based strategy game kinda like Heroes of Might and Magic.I have never done it before and would like to gain some experience in that field,But I have no clue on which art program to use to design my art for the game..I will be using unity and would prefer if the application was free :)

  • If you're not a strong artist I suggest just using coloured squares or ripped assets until you've got your mechanics working properly. A common trap for devs (and one I fall into regularly) is to waste time creating art assets to fit their prototype than just using placeholders and focusing on code.

To answer your question directly though, Paint.NET and Gimp are popular free options for drawing.
  • Thanks Fengol, I have noticed you answer a lot of my questions and would just like to thank you :) ..I am developing the game myself so I think your right about me spending too much time on how the game looks.
  • Hey Cyperus,

If you are going to make a game like Heroes of Might and Magic I would suggest you do a REALLY REALLY basic version of it because it will take a lot of time and you will most likely give up on it before even finishing it. Once you have a lot more experience you will feel a lot more confident in doing bigger projects.

Blender3d - Free 3D Modeling (You could generate 2d images for your game from it if you want to have a 2.5D game)
GIMP - Free and very similar to Photoshop
  • Look here if you really want some free art: http://opengameart.org/

But generally, yes just leave the art out to start. Make a game. Forget how it looks. Make it move and do things right first. Worry about art later.
  • Not really like Heroes,I think games like that are way to complicated for a indie game developer..It was the closest I could come to explaining what type of game I want...If you guys dont mind here is a demo I found on youtube that will clarify what type of game I want to make. "" .But i want to give the player a set number of turns and weapon upgrades.
  • I swear to you unless you've made 10+ things already, what you set out to make will not be what you end up making. Just make stuff. Keep it small. Don't overthink it just yet.

    JUST MAKE STUFF.
  • Okay cool..Thanks for the advice guys :)
