[Release] GemJam

edited in Projects
Hi guys,

I've finally released my first independent game, GemJam :)

It's a fantastically simple, Simon Says clone, that myself, and a designer buddy of mine (PatrickDN), made in 4 weeks.

All of my previous apps never made it to prod, either because scope creep got the better off me, or I got distracted with a new exciting game idea.
Because of this, we decided to push the MVP, with many of our planned features (and even a few optimisations) left out on purpose. We'll add these in future updates.

If you guys have the time, I'd really appreciate some solid feedback.

The game is completely free at this stage, and the interstitial ads are optional. If you don't want to see any ads, you don't have to.

Known issues:
  • Major - App doesn't install on devices that force installation to External SD cards. I think I'm missing an android permission. I'm hoping I can fix this up tonight.
  • Minor- How to play screen has spelling issues (My bad!!! I was trying to push late last night)

Lol, I initially tried that, but didn't know how to resize the images to be slightly smaller. I checked out the BBcode ref, but couldn't get the resize working.

  • Nice! Played it a bit (at work so can't test it out 100%). I like the graphic style and complement 'pops'. It's nice and fluent to start a game, easy to retry and check leaderboard.

    Few suggestions...just ideas :

    - The top timing bar - instead of resetting the time bar every time you touch a correct gem... pre-calculate the total time a user will need, so 1 bar runs down (it supplies a more 'suspense' feeling).

    - Maybe give the user some reward for hitting a big combo in a great time? e.g. a 10 combination was done in 2 seconds.. user earns a badge? or even a powerup? that will be used in the next round. e.g. a big combination was completed quickly..I earned a 'level up' powerup that avoids me of losing when I make a mistake.

    - Once I played the game I can't get back to the Main Menu.. or did I miss it?

Overall it's nice and smooth to play :)

    Thanks so much :)

I wasn't expecting the timer change to make much difference, but after supper I knocked out a quick prototype and gave it a try. It feels much better.

The Home Button was one of those "features" that got dropped during the rush to prod.

I just pushed an update to enable Immersive mode on KitKat and higher android devices and it also includes our home button in the Game Over screen, as well as the new suspense timer ;)

The power-ups/achievements are on our roadmap. We just want to get the polish right before we start adding on new features :)

Thanks again for the great tips.

Thanks for all the feedback @guineapixel ! The gameplay does feel alot better with the timer change, like @MutantPigeon24 said, we have achievements and polish in our roadmap but the timer bar makes a huge difference!

    Thanks! :)

  • Wow, very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Downloading now!
  • Hi guys,

    Just a quick update:
V1.1.0 of GemJam has been released.

    New things include:
    - Achievements are now available
    - More sounds have been added
    - You can now selectively turn off Vibrations from the side menu
    - Go straight to the relevant leaderboard from the Game Over screen, by clicking the leaderboard button

The majority of the changes were under the hood bugfixes and improvements.
The achievement system I built should allow me to add some more extravagant achievements later down the road.

@guineapixel We've added an achievement for a speedy fast round... Its DIFFICULT to get :D
  • Just wanted to give you guys a quick heads up. We've made our 1st dollar through Unity Ads ($1.01 to be exact), and are exceptionally proud :D

We've actually been on a winning streak (relatively at least) with the app.
    • We're up to 121 installs,
    • We've made our 1st dollar,
    • Got a small Dev Blog up and running,
    • The app is now listing similar apps in the Play Store, linking us to competitors,
    • and our next feature (Skins) is nearly ready for release.
