While Void is a shining example on why you should prototype your games as early as possible, I am glad I worked on it. Void features infinite terrain support, map editor, client server multiplayer and a custom weapon system. The idea was to get players to survive on a series of floating islands in space with an interesting story behind all of it.
Players would be able to mine, build and fight who ever they felt needed to be fought (wild life, other humanoid alien races, or other players trying to survive). With a permadeath system and a countdown until a portal opens as a way out everyone needs to survive and work towards that goal in their own way. The lack of an early prototype and the hope that a certain system would work out ultimately lead to the game being abandoned. The problem is quite simple, top down shooters can only work in close courters or alternatively in a zoomed out situation. To solve that problem however I experimented with a rotating view, thus providing more screen coverage infront of the player. This did not work and just ended up making one dizzy even with slower rotation. Perhaps I could have used less detail made the units smaller so that the game was more zoomed out. However, that was a few months ago and I am currently in another project.
However it is fun making and testing guns and if there is demand and I can get something to plug my hard drive in I could always upload the server program if anyone wanted to play the game with/against friends.
