  • I'm always confused by posts like this: What sort of feedback do you want on this?
  • I don't think this is specially a request for feedback as much as an announcement for the a release of a game, which should also be welcome on the forums, no?

I don't see how endless posts about releases of games produced in isolation elevate the community discussion at all. It's always hard to talk about these games, the marketing impact of posting about their release here is beyond negligible, and isolated releases aren't really a thing I like to encourage.

That's why I ask what someone's expectations are in posting like this: Are they just notching a bedpost, and as such wouldn't welcome discussion of their game? Or are they open to talking about what they've made critically with the intent of either improving it at some point, or upping their own skills as a result?

I don't see how you can know which the OP intended either.

  • I think it's always great thing to hear about any game released from any South African developer/team, whether they participate in the community here or not, and whether they want pre-release feedback or not. The alternative is to only hear about other developers and their undertakings randomly via the grapevine, which then leads us to say "Who are those guys popping out of the woodwork, and why aren't they here?"

Yes, @critic should have been more explicit in his post about the reason for posting it, but I don't think that every single post about any game should be for the express reason of garnering feedback if the developer doesn't intend that.

That said, active community members are likely not going to be very aggressive in actually playing the game unless there is a directive for them to do so. But it still doesn't mean that people should only be allowed to post their projects if they are in development and are requesting feedback.

I didn't say anything about being allowed or not allowed. Neither did you at first: You mentioned welcoming. That's quite a shift, especially if you're going to be putting the allowing on me...

I see this as participating in the South African dev community, if anything it's just an awareness ping to the community. There really isn't much publicity value of posting this here. And I don't really understand the tone taken by admin @dislekcia, shouldn't any development or status update from a SA devs be welcomed here?

  • For what it's worth, I enjoy these posts. They're concise, easily digested, and just as easily dismissed - and I'd rather have more of them in one place.

That's all I was asking in my original post. Comments and suggestions based on playing the web version shall be kept to myself.

That's a much larger debate. One that centers around patterns of behavior that existed in the local development community in the past and how well those systems worked in terms of creating/growing everything from a community, to skills, to careers. It's also a matter of doing things like measuring impact of specific actions on the local development scene as a whole. As such, it's probably not a great discussion to have in this thread. I'm not sure what my admin status has to do with anything (other than I have to read these forums during my holidays and make sure they're spam-free).
  • Congrats on the release, @critic. You should write up a postmortem of the project's conception and development, it's reception etc. Those are always interesting.

    And good luck!
  • Thanks @garethf, I'm make a note to do that if anything interesting happens with the project. From my experience with Android games, I'm expecting an underwhelming response and this really wasn't intended as a carrier defining development :)

It's just my personal feeling. But when I see someone post about the release of their game as the first post on these forums I feel like this forum has failed them.

In that there are so many opportunities for growth by seeking out other developers' feedback during the development process. I presume @critic is getting that feedback elsewhere.

Obviously I'm glad that @critic posted here at all. But I'm a bit sad MakeGames couldn't help with the development of City Color World and @critic's growth as a developer.

In any case. Best of luck with the launch!
  • I've been here for over a year with some 70 odd posts. Have also attended a few community nights, you really don't need to worry about this forum failing me :)

Thanks for the good luck wishes, same to you.
  • @critic Well I'm glad to hear that : )
  • @critic, the planet and city generation is really cool. Have you thought about using this tech for a space exploration/strategy game?
  • Yes, I have a few ideas for a pc game that would use the planet and city generation prototypes more predominantly than this release.
