Wrangle - See what your friends are playing.

Hey guys; I've been working on an app called Wrangle.

The basic idea is that it lets you see what your friends are playing, instead of having to open up all the launchers (Steam, Battle.net, Origin etc). I've only spent a few days working on it so there's a bunch of rough edges but I'd love some beta users / feedback!

Check it out: wrangleapp.com & thanks in advance!

  • This a pretty neat idea.

    - When you first said App, I thought it was a mobile app, doh! Such are the times we're living in that stand-alone desktop apps seem unpopular these days.

    - The site kicks me to an https connection, but your SSL certificate isnt working properly - I get a "Connection Untrusted" when I follow the link and have to add a security override to visit the site. I doubt you need SSL for anything that you're going to be doing on your site?

    - Why a picture of some random american skyline? I know you're still busy styling the page, it just seems a bit out of place. Shouldn't it be colourful and filled with gaming pictures like Steam or GoG.com?

    - I'm not sure how you're going to a) prove to people that you are not collecting their data in the background (of course you can claim not to, but it doesnt prove anything) and b) add enough value to gamer's lives that they will choose to use this over the built in Steam or Origin game reporting + friends list + chat features. There's a lot of momentum going for those systems that you'll need to overcome.

  • Very cool idea! I was just wondering if there's a way to consolidate ps3 and steam play data in a simliar way to https://steamdb.info/calculator/?player=tuism&currency=us

    Have you got ps3 support?

Can you use Steam and various APIs and make it autoload from lists? Adding people individually is tedious.
  • Cool idea. Are you planning on having Linux support?
  • Thanks for the feedback guys!

Yeah I haven't been able to figure out why FX complains but Safari/Chrome are fine with the HTTPS. I'm quite keen on having it as a blanket thing just for perception.

Me neither but I'm going to try!

Not yet; though if I get some traction I'd definitely look in to consoles!

There's probably something do-able with the Steam OAuth stuff; this is a great idea thanks! The onboarding needs a ton of work.

Yeah definitely. The clients have been (relatively) easy to do. If I get a bit of traction Linux is next on the list.
  • Very cool indeed.

I am just wondering what problem this solves. Personally I don't have a need for this, actually I don't like it when people know exactly what I am doing at every moment. I also don't really care what other people play. If I care enough about what they play I want to talk to them personally and get their thoughts on whatever game they are playing.

If you could pitch this to me or create a scenario where this is useful maybe I will understand it better.
Nonetheless its a great idea on a technical level.

  • Actually fundamentally I do agree with @Kobus, while cool, it's probably not something that adds to my routine. BUT it would do for some people whose daily habits include online gaming with friends in this or that game. Heck I might get into that. One day.

Personally, as I mentioned before, I want to see the stats side of things - so like that Steamdb thing, but with multiple trackers integrated (e.g. my PS3 game stats). Other people will have more systems to integrate, and if this can be the one-stop shop for all game stats trackable, that'd be great :)
  • So how does this differ from XFire or Raptr? And why would I want to use it instead of them? Or stop me from using Steam as a launcher for other games which will show that I'm using them. Not trying to be detrimental here, just trying to understand the use of what you are making.

I guess that's kind of the key. My target is specifically people who like to casually play online with their friends.

It's definitely similar to xfire/raptr. I'm aiming to be a little less of a huge platform [chat, achievements etc] and a bit more of a light touch point. So instead of trying to be a level above Steam/Origin and do all of what they do and more, I'd rather just be the place you check in to see where your friends are, and then pick up the conversation on that platform.

So as a real-world example last night I was sitting on the couch and felt like some game time. I opened my phone and had a look if any of my friends were online. A friend was in Diablo 3 and another in Battlefield 4 so I went to my computer, opened up Origin and joined the BF4 friend there.
