[Prototype] Dive! - Week 6 of OGAW
Finally got back into this.
Missed out a couple of weeks as I was bedridden with some affliction. Just gonna count this game as Week 6 :).
This week I wanted to make a Soccer satire game where you're essentially playing as an actor. You're trying to get the best performance by diving and getting fouls etc. You get a star rating at the end of every match and if you're season is good enough you get an Oscar from Septic Bladder (Sepp Blatter).
That was the plan at least :P. Haven't got anything playable once again this week as it's not really a game.
Fell victim to overconfidence, frankly. The AI for the surrounding players with passing, tackling etc. was more complicated than I anticipated, so I never even got to doing the diving/acting system :(.
I think that the reason this week failed was actually because of design. I still don't really have an idea of how the acting/diving system's actual mechanic would work and that's probably why I floundered so long with the AI. I could have made the entire game with only one player on each side, or a multitude of simpler options. I didn't invest enough time in pre-production design, I think. I need to sit down and think out what I want the game to be, rather than flopping around intuitively. I've done this previously, but I'm trying out lots of different design processes to see what works. So far a blend of early pre-production design and intuitive ongoing design seems best (which, when I type it out, seems obvious :/ ).
Anyway, all is not lost, because the AI was fun to make and I learnt the mysteries of the .Gif :D.

I really love the idea as well :(. Yeah I think web and touch devices would be perfect.
This idea is something I'll definitively come back to soon, just needs a lot more design work. I'd actually love to make a whole collection of soccer satire games in a bundle called "The Sad State of Soccer" :P.
The other idea is a Refereeing game in the style of Papers Please, where the rules of the game keep changing and you have to keep calling the game consistently and correctly. Near the end of the game you get the usage of a fourth official who helps you make decisions - this upgrade makes the entire game suddenly and ridiculously easy :).
There're many ways to tackle this theme - it could have been a quicktime event like game, it could have been a simulation (physics etc a la Pain), it could have been many things, but you're right - you needed to actually go and put things down first and get some kind of play going.
Kudos for trying :)
A fun aspect might be to add a referee/linesman eyeball... :) if he's not looking, its time to take a dive or pop that forward pass... Hahaha. You know a "sneaky" fun factor. A cheeky eye blinking timing thing?
My knowledge about soccer is not that great, they don't have TMO's (television umpires) like in rugby do they? oh god I sound like a soccer mom... oh well, this is cool. I like. Reminds me of sensible soccer where one had all that control and felt like you could curve that ball into the back corner of the net. Fifa and all the others have NEVER made me feel that amount of control again. Just my R0.02 :)
PS: is that LiceCap at work... gif? :)
