Um. I'm seeing a bunch of these popping up. I contacted one of the people who owns such an account (well, I called across to him at his desk :P), and he claims that while he hasn't logged in a while, he also didn't delete his account -- and now he can't log in again.

Any idea why this is happening?

In order to get more accurate stats for the last AGM and to remove sleeper spammers I deleted a lot of old accounts. I see now I should have checked if the old accounts have valid posts and preserved them.

Your co-worker should be able to re-create his account; his original email address and username are available.

Was there a post to notify users of such a cleanup? It seems like the reasonable thing to do...

I know it's kind of late to be saying it now (though it's not as if I had the chance to say this before, given I didn't even know about it), but I think that was a terrible call. There are at least three people who've inboxed me about games and game art who have Deleted User accounts who I imagine will have lost the conversation thread.

Do we make backups of the forum at all?

I've restored about 100 valid users (a user that's either posted a comment, sent a PM or hearted a comment) and their user names and passwords should all be working now.

Let me know if there's anyone I missed and I can try to restore their profile too.

Though there are a couple of people who posted on the first two pages of the welcome thread, who I really doubt are spambots and such, but are still showing as [Deleted User]
