When should you post on Greenlight?

edited in Questions and Answers
I see Steam Greenlight now has Concepts

"If you have an early game or software concept that you'd like to get in front of potential customers, you can post them here to get feedback and reaction. Posting in the concept section allows you to create a page that supports the same features as normal Greenlight items such as discussions and comments. The voting here serves only to give the developer data and reactions and doesn't work toward getting the game distributed on Steam."

My question is, when should I submit you submit your game to Greenlight? When you're only in the polishing stages, feature complete, most features implemented?

  • The Greenlight system is gamed as a popularity contest - don't launch it before you already have an audience.

When you know people will vote for it. Same question as "When should I release my game? -> When you know people will pay for it".

I'm pretty certain that Greenlight Concepts are designed to allow people that are skilled at producing media to make mockups of their game ideas so that people could show their support. STASIS would have worked as a concept because it looks so good, for instance. I'm not convinced that it's the same sort of financial boot to the pants that Steam is usually seen as, it's just votes after all, not purchases.

Greenlight is most useful to you as a beat in the narrative of your game's development. It's (generally) hard work to produce stories that the press can report on, so (if you can afford to) wait until your game is newsworthy and use the launch on Greenlight to spark some attention.

(And I agree with the previous posts)
