There are some helpful lists of software in it I believe. (And like @Dislekcia suggested, the best thing to do is download one of the free ones and start doing tutorials and trying things, Game Maker Studio is a good place to start).
Sorry to sound very noob but I'm literally just getting started. I'm trying to learn how to make maps specifically for a fps. Do I need an engine (Unity) and something like Render to start or just render? I've been working on bryce a bit but that dsnt seem to b the popular choice for the direction I wanna go in
My friend is doing the programming side of things so I'm basically just gonna make maps play with daz a bit for the models but I'll check out this hammer editor. He's busy learning how to use the crytec engine so I'm gonna make stuff to import to that
Eh. If your game's going to end up being in CryEngine, then you should probably be building maps in CryEngine too. The Hammer Editor's mainly for Valve/Source stuff, afaik.
If you're working in Bryce and can export obj/fbx files, I imagine CryEngine can import those fine, but you'd probably have to do some setup in CryEngine itself too, like collision and materials.

Enjoy!

If you're only looking to make maps, there's Value Hammer Editor that allows you to make custom maps for TF2, Half-Life, Counter Strike, etc.
If you're interesting in learning programming and game development then Game Maker suggested by @dislekcia is really the best option.
