Does anyone know of any good writing exercises for game development?

edited in General
Hi

I've been googling concept art quite a bit and for starters I reckon a good exercise would be to take an image and write the backstory for that image, in fact one may branch out relating to the image in any way.

For example:
Describing what the image encompasses, going into detail about the mood and emotional connotation, and even evolving the idea.

Kind regards

Jurgen

  • I'm a fan of directly practical exercises for these sort of things, so I'd say the best option is to make an actual game centred on narrative and just getting experience making little projects like that.

If you want to focus on the writing to the exclusion of all else as much as possible (in case that's your specialised skill), you could pick up Twine (http://twinery.org) and make something with that.

Past that, I'm looking forward to seeing what the upcoming writing compos are about.

  • Twine is definitely a great too to use. @hanli and I want to introduce it in the writing jams (along with Inform7), and the jams themselves should help with exercises too!
