  • Do a week of tutorials in the free versions of both. The one you end up making additions to the tutorial stuff in afterwards is the one you like the most :)
  • Iv worked with unity a bitn have the free version but there is no free version of the unreal engine all I seen of it was a ton of stuff on youtube and from what I saw it looks really good and a lot easier to use than udk. That's why I was looking into it. The blueprint system looks interesting.

I have an idea for a game that I wanna try build its a rpg 3rd person type style so iv been looking which engine would work best for that style of game.

I've heard from artists that UDK is very easy to get something 3D looking good (easier than in Unity).

I thought that UDK was free until you put your game on sale (and then they'd take 25% or so after your first $50,000). I gather you only pay the $100 for UDK if your game is going commercial.

I'm really no expert though. I was dissuaded from looking more into UDK myself because A ) I already had pro Unity and was competent in it and B ) I heard it wasn't as programmer friendly as Unity.

But a third person game sounds ideal for UDK. And the blueprint thing sounds very convenient for someone who doesn't want to delve deep in the scripting. (much like Play Maker in Unity, which isn't free)

You should ask the RuneStorm guys for advice. They made Viscera Cleanup in UDK. If you can, try do what @Dislekcia suggested.
  • Not sure I can lend much assistance, having tried neither UE4, nor Unity :P
We have UDK experience (UE3), and from what' I've heard/know, UE4 is much more open. UDK's biggest issue for us has been the fact that lots of the code is inaccessible, something UE4 is supposed to be much better at.

UDK seems very much like an engine designed for 3d FPS/TPS games ;)
  • thanks for the advice guys :) im still looking into it :) cant wait to see unity 5 tho :D looks awesome.
and the 3rd person game i wanna make is only gonna happen in a long while once i get better at making games and so on :) i think i was way over my head when i started looking at it so now i have a smaller idea that im going to build instead :)
  • I used udk and now I am using unreal 4, I find it easier , still learning blueprints ,you can save your blueprints and use them in different levels and projects , also your can subscribe for 19 dollars and download .Check it out ,cancel your subscription afterwards if you like ,they also have templates for third person and first person, they are adding a flying template and roll ball template in the next update.
I never used unity so I cant comment on it.
