Recording games

edited in General
This must have come up a million times but I can't find it in the discussions, so I'm gonna ask...

What do you use to record videos of your games?

I used to use OBS for recording, but it's fiddly as hell and now it's basically stopped working for reasons unknown. It would take like half a second of video and the rest would be inanimate with the sound playing.

Is Fraps the only alternative? If so I guess I should just go ahead and buy it?

  • I used to use FRAPS ... commercial version of it ... but then it stopped working for me and I switched over to OBS.

    Weird ... role reversal.

I am for one very happy with OBS but I have found that you need to keep it up to date all the time.
  • By "keep it up to date" do you mean re-installing it? Cos I do install updates whenever it asks, but I've been having tons of issues - first of all it's choppy as hell, then it stopped actual recording (like previously described), and I'm not sure if it's a setting issue or my computer is just not strong enough... Though if I can't record a Game Maker game running then there's something quite fundamentally wrong, isn't there? >_<
  • You could try Camtasia if your games are windowed. For fullscreen games I use FRAPS. :)
  • We use bandicam here, usually good! Think it costs $$$ though
  • Bandicam all the way :)
  • Cool thanks guys, gave Bandicam a look, tried the free version and it performs without a hitch! Realistic file sizes without having re-compress or a million settings is a huge time saving bonus :)

    Going with that! Thannnks :)

  • My personal vote goes for OBS (open broadcaster software) I use it to make my youtube videos before I edit them. it makes some really high quality low size files to be edited nicely.

    also: free, so that's nifty
  • On my machine OBS doesnt work in fullscreen. I prefer to use fraps, with handbrake to get a nice little file.

MSI Afterburner has some nice recording features but file sizes are usually quite large but it is free.
Or if you have a GTX 600+ series NVidia graphics card, it has ShadowPlay

  • +1 ShadowPlay... soooo awesome. I use it all the time and i don't notice any hit on the fps.
