Testflight dropping Android

edited in General
OK so any of you that have used Testflight for iOS or Android device testing will be aware how useful the product really is. Apple has bought out Testflight (well the parent company assuming the sale is approved). So surprise, surprise Testflight is ending support for Android.

The question is does anyone know of an alternative for Android.

*EDIT* An alternative that will give you the detailed information on the test devices who has downloaded etc, track comments and so on. The Google Playstore doesn't really give the same detail.

  • The question is, why do you need this for Android, when you can distribute the apk? Does it bypass the phone needing to be rooted, and makes the test app non-distributable?

@Tuism Testflight gives details back to the app owner on the devices used, crash reports and usage. You can even program TestFlight hooks into your app to let it report on specific events in your app. There's a lot of stats you can get from using TestFlight which is the primary reason for using it besides easy distribution.

The distribution management in TestFlight is also powerful, letting you manage an automatic distribution list of users or device types.

Sharing the .apk would mean you have to roll all of that yourself
  • I see! Yeah right now I'm actually not happy about shooting out apks willy nilly cos you never know where those may end up today and in 2 months time. Controlled testing feels like is important.

Testflight is awesome, I haven't even explored all those hooks and analytics yet :)

Heres to hoping the Beta system on Windows Phone gets that kind of analytics added out of the box :P

  • @edg3 that would be great, especially if Android could add that too. Then at least there is a solution for each of the platforms.
  • @duncanbellsa pointed out a test harness for Android called http://www.testfairy.com/ will be giving that a spin on our next Android app.
  • Nice find! That looks like it might be decent!
  • This does not look so bad. We will be giving this a try soon with one of our games. http://www.thebetafamily.com/
Won't have the same feedback options as TestFlight but we use an internal beta testing form anyways. You can get reports via Flurry for crashes etc... but that requires a bit of hooking in. (Thats what we do.)
