How not to make a trailer

"This is an advert for the colour brown, and red cubes:"

"Evolve is the new game from Turtle Rock, the people who thought of Left 4 Dead. It’s supposed to be out later this year, and is apparently a multiplayer shooter of some sort. I used to know slightly more about it, but then I watched this teaser and my sum knowledge went down."

  • errrr 4 v 1?

    lololol
  • Well that just looks like someone was playing around with templates in After Effects under the guise of making a teaser trailer. Bizarre.
  • I think as a teaser this is actually very successful.
  • @farsicon

    -_-

    That is all.

  • Here's the official trailer:

  • Mommy that looks gorgeous. Next gen hardware starting to really do its thing.

Though I wonder when they're gonna start having clothes that don't deform with the rest of the body and actually animate as clothes, if you know what I mean. Every time I see one of those stretchy "loose shirts" I get a bit sad :)
  • @duncanbellsa : now THATS! how you follow up a teaser.

  • The more I see that teaser, the more it makes sense.

Yes, I agree that it doesn't give away anything, but it does peak interest. Those who have been following the news about the studio understand what kind of game they were keen to make.

Personally I think the logo is amazing, as @Tuism says "4 vs 1", thats exactly what it is.
And the fact that the large monster you play as grows in size, the teaser reflects that in a very minimal way :)

    Anywho... that's just my 2 cents :)

The actual video is not next gen - it's just a normal pre-rendered CG :)
  • It's true that my mind automatically drifts to "in-game engine" whenever I see video content. Which is *obviously* false :P Duh me XD
  • Ja. I'm sure it's been mentioned on this forum before that there should be more in-game vids. But I guess that would not create enough hype :) Whenever I see a CG trailer, I immediately get bored because the actual game almost always has a very different feel to it.
  • Well the trailer is in-engine footage, not so much pre-rendered. There's a rad gameplay video as well, graphics are great:

It does look good, but I still don't buy that the characters in the first vid are animated in realtime.

This is probably starting to get a little off-topic :P
  • At least there wasn't any "epic" trailer music.

  • Dat fire is gorgeous :D

Anything can be real time if you throw enough power into it. ;) (Just pump up all your settings, set your renderer to render a fixed number of frames, and it's no longer "real time", even though it's in your real time renderer, using your in-game assets.) After seeing the UE4 and Agni Philosophy tech demos, I've learnt that, aside from the occasional shadow flickering, I can't really tell what's pre-rendered any more.

It's gorgeous. I love the fire. :) Yay for asymmetry!
  • Yeah I loved the idea of asymmetry from what he was talking about, it's like NETRUNNER SHOOTER :D
  • @Elyaradine Ja I understand. They do it in the Unreal Engine all the time. But this just looks so amazing! Lot's of small animation details. I actually don't know why I bother differentiating it anymore - graphics are getting too damn good these days :)

btw, I've actually done exactly what you've said for my own game. But for normal in-game recording, there's Shadowplay which is so nice and easy :D

Nah, that's definitely realtime. Doesn't look that different from the high end Naught Dog stuff (amongst other games). Welcome to the now!

  • lol ok. This "next gen" is amazing. I have no more words.
