I hope this is all old for you otherwise watch the video in the link. I only saw this now and it made me believe you can be AAA and Indie at the same time.

  • This echoes a lot with what @dislekcia and everyone talks about with regards to open development, right?

It's really difficult to actually do, even if you try to do it from day 1, it takes a few specific elements to make it work. I wonder if they're elements that one could learn, or if you cultivate your strength in a few of the right areas.

Most likely a combination of both, but I'd love to know what a lot of these elements are. I can think of stuff like:

    1. High-variance games with lots of content and therefore balance and therefore opinions (Broforce's bros, DD's gods, races, etc)
    2. A good story (100 000 000's dev story)
    3. A unique *something* (usually some mechanic)
    4. Big name involvement
    5. Controversial claims/beliefs/methods
    6. ??? What else?

I hope I'm not sounding like I'm making it sound easy - it's not. At all.
  • Quite a good listen. Some of the concepts 'seem' like common knowledge, but only when i'ts put together like this does it properly hit home.
  • Thanks for the post. I found it rather interesting!

Easier said than done though. Building an audience obviously takes time and i have seen a few community members mention that immersing yourself in a community that you can become part of is probably one of the most important and helpfull things you can do as an indie game developer, for your game and yourself. I am ashamed to say that i am probably the worst example of an active community member though! But I am going to work on that! :-)

Gazza_N post talking about prototypes and jams has some elements towards what you're asking.
  • Yeah I watched that too, it was a good one :)
  • I don't comment much (I just lurk around), but might as well say that this is interesting :)
