[Tools] 3D for dummies

edited in Questions and Answers
Well, dummy, just me :P

I'm thinking of getting some fundamentals in 3D down (cos Unity... XD), and wanted to pick up Blender. Is it a good place to start, is it a good prog to learn, is it going to help me more than hinder me, or not?

Thanks guys :)

  • Blender's great. :) Go for it! :)
  • Its a good program to learn. It is very different from commercial packages that are available in the way you interact with objects, but still offers all the same tools and is free to use. I would say just do it, Youtube has sooo many video tuts on it, the world awaits :)
  • The best reason to use blender is because it's free. Even though it can hold it's own in most cases, I would suggest 3ds max or maya if you have access to them instead. I come from a max background, and recently decided to use blender for my indie initiatives and it is very different to use, to the point of being frustrating. But... if you're starting off and have no plans to go full commercial (games or otherwise) then it would be perfect. I have seen people do amazing things with it :)
  • Yeah blender is good, fundamentals are the same regardless of what package you use. If you can though, try get a student license for Maya. The main thing maya / max has going for it is there are well established pipelines for doing things - which becomes more important when doing 3D commercially and deadlines are tight. Perhaps this applies more for film / vfx style 3d.
  • Another point, you might find you have affinity to a certain software package. I learned both Max and Maya, but loved Max, not so much Maya. Just the way they do things, Max is a bit more technical, while Maya perhaps is more Organic.
I also think that you can get a student version of Max and Maya, since they are both part of Autodesk now.

Also what @shanemarks said, the principals are the same. I learned most of my 3d from Bryce, using Primitives and Booleans before moving onto 3ds Max 2.5

To break it down, in 3d, all you can do is MOVE ROTATE and SCALE in XY and Z. And that applies to everything. Whether it is a vertex, an edge , a face (polygon) or a model. This is the same in all packages :)
