Oculus Rift Devs?? - Some Questions and Opportunities :)

edited in Questions and Answers
Hey Guys I just have a few questions and opportunities for anyone working with the Oculus Rift in SA atm :)

First and foremost:

Is anyone devving for the Oculus Rift in SA??
Where are they based??

If there are people working with the OR I have been contacted by some people who want to great a VR game of sorts, the idea seems pretty simple and would translate nicely onto OR. I feel this could be an opportunity for OR devs to make some money, Giant Box Games obviously can't do this as we don't Dev for OR haha! :P So just thought we would Pay it forward and see if anyone from MGSA wants the Job :)

Thanks guys!

  • We have one, based in Durban.
  • I have one as well. Also based in Durban.

Sniper, just out of curiosity, whereabout in Durban are you and what do you do? Heh, just realized I could check out your profile and find out for myself, silly me.

Ah, my friend and work colleague Christian knows you guys and often speaks about you. Anyway, just saying hello... Hello! :)
  • I am a programmer and wouldn't mind dabbling a bit deeper into Oculus Rift development.
  • I would love to try these out some time and then save up and get myself a pair
  • Hello @ScurvyKnave we used to work from home (next door to Derivco) but we have now moved into our own office in Umhlanga, with some great sea view :)
  • Hey guys heres a little update :)

I have basically spoken to an educational organisation about using the OR to teach students however they are SUPER SLOW on the response >.< I will keep all updated.

On an unrelated note: What is your guys thoughts on Survival horror on the OR? I mean it could be so conducive to creating some seriously scary experiences :P
  • Its completely immersive and really scary. Its on my to do list :)

Of course there's like a million different hidden ideas for the OR especially since its so new. A survival horror should work really well.

Here's one with a 'planned' release date before the end of this year:

  • Wow those games look exceptional! :) The forest looks creepy as all hell!

Have you guys seen the movie Gravity (Brilliant BTW) are there any Sci Fi horros for OR on the way? or is that a venue we can still seize :P

I really feel this system will open some serious avenues in terms of player experience :P
  • In my opinion, a horror game isn't really the best genre to go for with OR. Don't get me wrong, its probably more scary than anything you'd experience in real life xD.

I've read a lot of comments from OR users who would play some guy's horror demo and then immediately rip off the headset when anything remotely scary happens lol. Sure that might not be the majority of people, but I doubt there will be a market for the horror OR adrenaline junkies xD.

I like the idea of survival/sci-fi/horror-ish. Just off the top of my head: Imagine some sort of apocalypse on earth, caused by an unknown phenomena while you (an astronaut currently in space) witness these events. You realise the danger and try to distance yourself but get devoured by the events (like a black hole).

You wake up on a seemingly desert planet which was home to an advanced alien race. At first you struggle to adapt to the scenario; finding food/water and building your resources. Any 'horror' part at this point would be through the experience of hunting creatures(large/fast ones) or hearing noises at night.

You attempt to 'learn' the strange alien technology and quickly understand it over time. This tech allows you to do many things over time, such as hover, fly, build faster, alien stuff.

At some point you notice that resources are some what limited and you're able to do more if you had 'more'. You manage to build an awesome-space-jet-thing which you would seek out a nearby planet to possibly gather resources from.

You reach out to the closest planet, only to soon discover a primitive race occupying it (or you assume its desert but there's actually something scary which happens.. at night o.o). You're not sure what they will do if they notice you. You could try befriend them or quietly take things behind their backs. They soon notice you and end up destroying your ship, as well as cast you to a dark side (permanently moonlight - can get very dark) of the planet where you will have to start again, except this time, you still have some epic alien device and you manage to develop your resources/structures much quicker than before.

In time, you face the 'unwelcoming' race again, only to conquer them and their land or befriend them and gain their trust.

This can be a forever expanding and somewhat dynamic game/idea.

I have lots of random ideas if anyone is interested to discuss =D

    Thanks for reading

  • Dom, you are welcome to try my rift sometime and see for yourself. You never know, after Pixel Boy you might do an OR game! You sound pretty interested.

@Warpenguin I had a ton of ideas for the rift, you can read a few in my previous posts, but did find that the motion sickness got to people in the first 15 min or so of use. So I revised the idea that at least in the beginning, you just go for short expiriences until people get more used to it. But im keen to discuss ideas, I have a lot of my own. We can start a new thread? OR Ideas?
  • @iceblademush The consumer version of the OR should reduce motion sickness quite a lot. The fact that the current dev kit doesn't have position tracking plays a huge role in causing the motion sickness xD.

We can make a thread, just need some devs and enthusiasts to take part =p
  • Well there are 2 of us so far :) do you have a rift @Warpenguin ?
  • No but I really want one!

I don't have much of a budget at the moment, I would like to get the dev kit 2 when it comes out though :D
  • @iceblademush I would love to try out your OR when I'm back in CT :)

Hahah yeah just have to see Pixel Boy to the end first ;)
  • I would love to try these out some time and then save up and get myself a pair
    hahahaha (yes sometimes I'm 12)
