  • Is anyone interested in trying out format the Cape Town people tried on their past meetup? It seemed to go down really well and seems to emphasise more game feedback and socialising?

    See it here: http://www.makegamessa.com/discussion/1170/event-cape-town-community-night-25th-september/p1

    It would look like this:

    - 6:30 - 7:00 - Meet, greet, and eat.
    - Rapid fire intros (10 min)
    - Community News (5 min)
    - Talk 1 - 20 min
    - Talk 2 - 20 min
    - Talk 3 - 20 min
    - Focused prototype feedback

    - Open Demo Floor

With demos of all the games we can muster, or that want feedback, set up outside the Auditorium.

YES. Always keen to try new things :)
  • I'll do rAge feedback
  • I'm down to do the design talk this month, on the world ends with you

TWEWY was SUCH a good fun game, and very well designed - in a very typical fashion after Japanese games :) Well, the principles are typically Japanese, but a lot of it were presented in different ways, and definitely remixed in a very different way. Though they're the same elements you can find in Megaman EXE, Kingdom Hearts... I think it was Chain of Memories, the DS one, and even Pokemon :)
  • Because this is the meeting straight after rAge, I would like someone to do a talk on common dev tools (Unity3D, GameMaker and such) for, hopefully, all the new people who'll be joining us from the expo. Can anyone volunteer?
  • That all sounds good. Then we have 3 talks up and running. I'll do the common dev tools talk if noone else is up for it?

Now we just need to confirm demos and machines to play them on. Can we get Bear Chuck; zX; Book of Blood; Toxic Bunny confirmed? And anyone else with a game they want played/want feedback on?

For focused feedback we could have something on the AI in Bear Chuck and the difficulty in zX, perhaps?
  • At the CT meetup, people said they'd be bringing their games, but it was pretty free-for-all in the end. Everyone just pulled out laptops/desktops/tablets and let rip. The venue had ample plugs and got really awesome as everyone started playing stuff.
  • That's pretty cool, we could all set up stuff so it turns into some kind of arcade :)

    Bear Chuck will represent :)

  • There should be 2 computer running the Hyperblast if we can help it ;)

We should have the tutorial levels done by then at worst (hoping they will be good for the rAge build)

With regards to the common dev tools: if we are using a single 20min slot are we going to be focusing on just one of the tools (GM or Unity) and if it is GM might I suggest doing the demo in GM8 as opposed to GM:S as the free version of GM:S is rather cruddy while the free GM8 can really just make a game without much problems.
  • No, I think the 20min should be as broad as possible, so GM, Unity, Unreal, artist tools for 2D and 3D and maybe sound. Basically all the beginner questions in 20min
  • Has someone here heard about construct 2 ? https://www.scirra.com/
It is the best tool for prototyping and full game making that I have seen. (for 2d games)

@Karuji I lecture classes in Randburg using the Free version of GM:S, and I havent had any issues? What issues have you run into?

I could give a short introduction to making games with GM?
I've got some student examples of what we created within our 2-4 hour classes, I'd be happy to showcase those? Maybe it's easier to just talk through the examples we created?
  • @duncanbellsa I've just converted zX from GM8 to GM:S (I've had pro since I started using GM:S) but given the difference of free functionality between the two I could go further with making a game in GM8 as opposed to GM:S. And I can really talk at length about why I find GM8 a better starter environment (it's a lot more forgiving to non-programmers)

I think the demos that your class has done would be an excellent platform for the talk.

    @ all

Although I still think each tool would require a 20min talk to show people some basics and get them excited about using it. Ye sure you can blitz through the first GM tutorial in 5min if you have the sprites loaded, but I can't see doing a decent demonstration to get people excited about using unity, gimp, or audacity. Since what I would really want is people to walk out of the meet going "Ok wow they made like 3 games in 20 minutes and there was quite a bit of cool stuff I want to go and try and make that myself.

I think just using the 20 minutes to tell people that there is this software is essentially just telling them that there is a list of stuff they should Google, and if we drop too much info there might be some form of analysis paralysis. If we just go here is this piece of software it is great for beginners if you're a programmer or artist: this is how you do stuff with it.

I think having Duncan give an intro and showing some student examples would be great, both as an intro to the software and to help manage peoples' expectations on the scope of game that they'd be able to make in a short amount of time (combined with the demos/feedback to see how scope might expand as you throw more hours at something).

Blitzing through hugely broad stuff sounds as if it'd be more intimidating than enlightening, and I don't see it's value. I also feel as if it'd place emphasis on the wrong thing, especially if it includes art and sound tools: i.e. downloading software vs. becoming more aware of the core skills that make an artist/designer/sound engineer/writer/etc. any good.

Also... what's the value in having rAge feedback? I'm not saying it shouldn't be done or anything; I'm just wondering what we expect people to get out of it, especially if we expect a bunch of new members to be coming from rAge.

I believe @Chippit may be demoing one of @Nandrew's games for him.
  • Wouldn't a talk about the logic of using tools instead of writing your own stuff (in all aspects of tool usage for games - so not writing your own image formats, etc) be far more helpful and less intimidating?
  • I don't need 20min for rAge feedback. I can probably just do it as part of the news.
  • This seems fun.
  • Awesome stuff.

Yeah I can just cruise over my course material. What we did week by week, as well as some examples of student games?
Should be able to squeeze that into 10 minutes quite easily :)
  • It would be super cool if I could get some feedback on Zombie Apocalypse Arcade, but I don't have enough time before then to make the changes I have going on at the moment :( Can I tentatively put my game down?
  • What we want to have going is for everyone who has games to set theirs up and rope people around to play. So of course you can bring your game! :D
  • Hi all.

Im very new to Game Development and i saw you guys at rage this year and i would like to know if even a "noob" can join this event?
  • Definitely @DeadPixel, everyone is welcome!
  • awesome then ill be there.
    Thanked by 1tbulford
  • Hi guys,
Was awesome meeting a bunch of you at rAge. I will definitely be pulling through for the monthly get togethers going forward - hard to call myself 'Indie Zoe' without keeping a finger on the local pulse. Excited to meet everyone then!
  • Hi Guys, saw your stand at Rage, very interested in joining the community. Im starting out with Game Maker Studio and would love to get some ideas and maybe give something back as well. Looking forward to meeting everyone at the Meetup.
*Super excited* to have a game dev community in my back yard !
    Thanked by 1tbulford
  • Hi guys.

I am busy with test week at varsity, but I would really like to come through for the event, especially for the introduction to development tools. Would it be possible for someone to record this part of the event and upload to Youtube? It could be very useful to add to the FAQ section of the site too?!

  • I know the MS campus is huge, is there a specific auditorium or sign boards to follow for the meet up ?
  • Great stand at rAge guys! Ill be there for this meet ... for a change.
    Thanked by 2tbulford Nitrogen
  • @RickyGC, we try to record all the talks at the meetups. But so far it has been a sporadic affair as we have only been able to do it when we have cameras available from the community. I will try to organize something before hand for this month's one though.

@Gresham, The audotoriums aren't too hard to find. When you enter the door you will see a security desk right in front of you, just head to to the right down a hall and you will see the doors of the auditoriums to your right. If I remember correctly we are in Auditorium 2. I hope that helps.

    @shambok...sjweeeet! :)
    Thanked by 2RickyGC gresham
  • I'm definitely there ......
  • So we need to confirm what's happening with the talks. I'd like to see a broad overview talk AND @duncanbellsa's Gamemaker Intro.

That way people become aware of the tools as well as get an intro to making cool stuff?
  • I don't think I need 20min for rAge feedback if I can take 5min during to news to share.
  • I've got my presentation ready, but might need to cull some of it as to not take up too much time.
  • This is cool. Will be there like a bear.
  • I'm looking forward to the event, I would really like to share my idea for a computer game I have been designing for awhile now and actually get some feedback
  • mmmm :/ think I'm only gonna get to come through next month, but will there be anything on boardgames?
  • Well, I can't decide what to do...

This would be my first event if I decide to go and I would really like to be there for the intro to game dev, but I also have a test at varsity the next morning :|

Can someone convince me to go :D What happens at the events except for the obvious on the agenda as stated above?

When would the next event be? (probably during exams :( )
  • @RickyGC study for your test!

We have community nights every 2nd Tuesday of the month so the next session will be 12 November.
  • GAH.

I was without internet last night after the rain, and couldn't pull the stuff I'm contracting on after hours, and ended up wasting an evening and going to bed early. I don't think I can make the meetup tonight. :(
  • You guys need to work on your marketing. This is awesome and I only discovered it today! I'm really hoping there are a few developers out there that need a graphics guy. I'd kill to do some work in that corner of the industry. See you tonight. :)
  • 12 November :) During exams

Can someone please try and get a video up. I also see the last meeting part 1 is on YouTube. Where is the rest?
  • @RickyGC, the rest is still with me. I'm going to try and upload them by Friday. Also, it's August's meet not September. September was unfortunately not recorded(that I know of).
  • I would really like to come to this event but I'm new to game making can I still come?
  • @Jumperduke Yes please do! We're having two talks aimed at getting new people into making games!
  • @Jumperduke, you sure can! :) There is no prerequisites for attending. The idea is to meet people that are making games, so the more the merrier.
  • That is perfect :) I was looking forward to watching all of it after seeing the intro, totally bummed when I couldn't find the rest!

  • Hehe, sorry about that. I was busy uploading the videos and something came up, so I couldn't finish. But like I said...it should all be there by the end of the week.
    Thanked by 1RickyGC
  • if I can just get a thorough intro to the dev tools, an explanation on what programming language I'll be(or should be) using .... yeah .... that'll be great
  • I'll be there, Im excited to see what y'all have been up too :)
