There are actually three questions there. I will answer in the order you presented.

1: There is a gender query because there is a second person reference on the activity page, and second person is a gendered reference.

2: The developers of Vanilla did not think of such a thing.

3: Same as above. This might be expanded that most of the developers were male, and from their use of forums the majority of users are male, and thus setting male as default would be easiest for the majority of forum users. Of course that second sentence is complete conjecture.

Until we drop the notion of binary genders & acknowledge sexual diversity/variations & biodiversity we're just splashing in the kiddy pool.

Also I think we should drop it in the suggestions and requests thread so admin can get to work.
