Indie Horror/Ambient Game: Tokoloshe

edited in Jobs
Hello makegamesSA community!

I am a 3rd year Sound Engineering Student from Cape Town looking into making a indie horror game.
I have seen many horror games in the past and thought that the myths of the Tokoloshe are so influential in South African Society that
it could most definitely be translated into a suspenseful/horrifying game. My goal with this project would be to create a unique game to be recommended to horror game testers/commentators on youtube such as Markiplier, Pewdiepie etc. to get some sort of exposure.
I live in Cape Town and am looking for a team of game developers (preferably locally) who would be interested in collaborating on this idea. As for the Sound ; a friend and myself will be doing Sound Design, Music and FX but neither of us have sufficient Audio Programming skills.
I hope that I can reach at least a few people that are interested; I think it could turn out really cool.

I would appreciate any kind of feedback/comments and please message me if you have any ideas, suggestions on the topic.

  • Welcome to the forums @Mexicanopiumdog, glad you could join us. :)

I'm going to suggest you checkout the helpful FAQ found here. Specifically the "I have a great game idea! How do I get it made?" paragraph.

Also, you are lucky enough to be in an area that have monthly MGSA meetups. I think the ones in Cape Town happen every last Wednesday of the month which would make the next one on the 25th of September. (Please can someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.) Meeting people can go a long way to building relationships that can later turn into teams of developers. :)
  • Hi @Mexicanopiumdog, perhaps a good way to start would be to partner with people that are already producing horror games (and getting played by Markiplier and co.) in Cape Town?

You should really check out @TheFuntastic's Towards the Light, it's primary scare vehicle is sound, so I'm sure you could help. I know that there's a new version brewing somewhere, but I couldn't find the thread easily, sorry.
  • There was also a recent attempt at a very similar game idea called Muti - not entirely sure what happened to it - Travis?

  • We paused the project pending funding. We have a good possibility to get that and it will restart. Bit hard to build what we have in mind in a vacuum.
  • Thanks for the warm welcome guys! The Muti project looks like something I would like to get my claws in..
  • I like your name and concept, but your gamer market will be small and you might offend them with using this old folk tale...?

Then again if you convince Jack Parrow to do the theme song it may just take off in SA at least.
  • "but your gamer market will be small and you might offend them with using this old folk tale...?"
I dont think It will offend anyone tbh. It is an indie game and Im not looking to release it commercially anyway (well for now at least)...And a Jack Parow theme song for a horror game. LoL
Thanks for the humour though ;)
    Thanked by 1ScurvyKnave
  • Are there any programmers out there keen to collaborate on this project, we have pretty much everyone we need except the guy putting in the codes....Message me if you are interested!
