Great boardgame design: Escape the Curse of the Temple!

edited in General
So I really enjoy watching Shut Up & Sit Down, especially now that they're on Penny Arcade TV. I haven't been watching long enough to know what the crap is up with the pears, but they're a wonderful source of boardgame inspiration and critique.

Their review of Escape the Curse of the Temple is like this brain-exploding concept reveal of amazingness that just makes you want to go "FUUUUUUCK! WHAT A GOOD IDEA!" over and over again.

OMG. Curses. So smart! GAH!

So interesting, I read another review of the very same game that said it was gimmicky and not worth your time :) but yeah it looks totally fun! Saw a copy around here somewhere, gonna go check it out :)

Edit: aaaaand it's already been cloned :( it's on the iOS store as "Trapped!". Thought it would be an easy rip off target.
  • @dislekcia it's the handy reference pear! (Thank you reference pear!) who may or may not be sentient and plotting the end of SUSD as we know it. It first appeared in season 1 episode 7 (see here). It became a running gag after that :)

I may be a bit of the fan-pear :| of the series...
  • That does look rather clever! The tiles seem like a rather neat way of having a "board" that's non-trivial without it becoming too familiar through repeated play, and the dice seem like a good way of including chance without leaving the player always at the mercy of a single roll, while also including strategy in the die-rolling.

I'll admit that I don't think that I'd like the pace of the die-rolls -- I don't think that that I like the sort of pressure that it seems likely to create -- but that's a matter of personal preference, rather than a mark against the game, I feel.
  • The relentless rolling is what makes the game fun! I love the idea of totally discarding player turns altogether, it's brilliant :)
  • Oh, I do daresay that others might like it -- it looks like a lot of fun if it's your type of gameplay. I'm just saying that I think that it's not mine. *shrugs*
  • It sounds very cool, except for having to play the CD on a hifi system somewhere (you still have a cd playing portable radio hifi right?)

Maybe you can use an hourglass or something.

And damn, he's a good presenter, wish I had those public speaking skills :P
