Part TIme Job in the Gaming Industry

Hello Guys, I am a 1st year Bsc Computer Science Student at NMMU. I have a passion for games and have a great interest in learning how to make them. My main Focus is Scripting in C# and mainly plan on using Unity. My question is:

Is there something like Part Time Jobs in the Gaming Industry?

I live in George and I plan to do a lot of Game Development Tutorials over the December Vacation. But since I am in University now I thought that maybe I should look at finding a part time job somewhere in a Software Development company. My ideal would be to work or part-time for a game development company but I know that those are a rarity in South Africa. We do have a game developer in George Called Fuzzy Logic, I am thinking of contacting them to hear if they could possible use me during that time, but the problem is that I am inexperienced and I don't know what I could do to help a game development studio as such. I am more than prepared to learn new stuff and spend extra time figuring out stuff. I mean I will pretty much do anything if I could get such an opportunity (I'm prepared to do like low-like lackey stuff like making coffee, getting people food, if possible QA Testing and whatever is possible).

What do you guys think is there something like a part time job at game development companies? Maybe if you know someone you could refer me to even if it is a normal Software Development company. I am just reaching out to people since I am a bit lost on this topic. In any case I am keen to learn and willing to do the lowest of tasks since I know that I am just a little 1st year and have lack of experience.

  • Part time jobs I'm not so sure of, but internships are possible if you ask around and are willing to sacrifice your holidays. Doing tutorials, and making some small projects is a really good way to spend your time though - if you keep it up while studying you should have a decent portfolio by the time you finish your degree.
  • Hi @raithza I am contemplating wether I should go job hunting or spend the time learning new Game Development skills on my own. Since I will be in George my options are quite limited, unless I can find something that happens online that I can do from home.
  • @mkShogun96 I was recently in George and had the pleasure of visiting Fuzzy Logic and chatting with their team. They were really nice and I'd suggest you send them an email. Just outline your availability and desire to learn. They may be able to offer you an internship during the holidays. I know they were looking to fill a junior programmer position. So, there's no harm in just having a chat with them. And they're doing some really cool stuff. :)
  • Thank you @SUGBOERIE, will definitely see if I can send them an email :D
