***Due to the overwhelming response these workshops have received we have had to close registrations for both events as our venues are now at full capacity. Thanks for the support everyone***
Hey Guys,
I'm very excited to announce a master class workshop that I've organised in partnership with the Institut Francais Afrique du Sud (IFAS) and Wits School of Arts.

Making games is serious business : two international experts and French video game entrepreneurs will share their knowledge and experience on the business side of video game, based on case studies and best practices in the international market.
Workshop speakers

*Vincent Vergonjeanne is the former CEO & Co-Founder of Kobojo, a European leader in the social gaming industry. He has founded a new game studio, EVERYDAYiPLAY, specialized in mid-core gaming. Vincent is also a business angel, free-to-play consultant and a lean startup enthusiast. He will deliver a 5 hour interactive and practical workshop entitled "How to become a successful video game entrepreneur", covering all the different steps and aspects of video game entrepreneurship.
You can follow him on twitter at @vvergon.

*Francis Ingrand is a videogame business veteran and entrepreneur, specialised in international distribution. Francis is also VP International of the SNJV (French National Union of Video Game) and President of Le Game, a corporation devoted to promoting the French video game industry internationally. Registered! Even if it's *just before* rAge I'm definitely gonna get in on it :)
I'll need to speak the Le Game and IFAS to see if that can be arranged, but currently no, it won't be recorded.
Would love to see a video recording!
Have fun and learn a lot!
I especially liked the talk (or part of a talk, I can't recall) about team culture and development workflow, I think this is super important and something that isn't emphasised nearly enough in the local community. We talk a lot about the core details of making games, like design, art, programming and such, but not much about the ancillary things like communication, team structure, management and such. Considering how important those skills are if you're trying to make games professionally, perhaps we should speak about it a bit more?
@LexAquilla has a collection of his tweets on the day somewhere as well, but I've misplaced the URL
AWESOME WORKSHOP! I felt it was a really practical and insightful bridge to thinking about gamedev in a business-y way.
But it's not just business as in publishers and free to play talk - the most important thing I got out of the day was SYNERGY. A game is made up of many many parts, and we should try to make our parts synergies as much as possible, and not have parts that work against each other, even if they're individually good, if they don't synergise, they're not as good as they should be.
The best example for me was my own game, Beat Attack. We discussed it and came out with this:
We identified these parts of the game:
Art & presentation: Beat Attack has a very cute look, and is attractive to the casual player.
Input mechanic: the controls are simple. One-button means again, attractive to the casual player.
Game mechanic: the timed and pressure-inducing, competitive aspect of the game fits competitive play.
And casual players who get attracted to the game won't stay for competitive aspects. The two aspects are generally diametrically opposed - yes there are always exceptions who love niches, but one should always consider the norm rather than the exception.
So... Beat Attack needs to either change hugely or be left well alone. And that's a good business decision.
