[Steam-Release] Galaxy Union

edited in Projects
Hi guys

For the past year I have been working on Galaxy Union, a 4x turn based strategy game. I finished the game last week and submitted it to a few places for publishing. Right now it's available at Desura, gameolith, IndieDB and IndieCity. The game was made with XNA and the code count sits at around 20k lines with some support software as well. Cybercritics is just me at the moment, depending on how well the game does that might change.

A turn limited demo is available from dropbox, let me know what you think.

  • Welcome to the community! How'd you find us, BTW? (We're always trying to get better visibility and if you've been working on something for a year before joining, that implies we didn't stand out right away)

That's a lot of work to put into a game, when did you start putting it up online? Also, I have no idea what's going on in your video - some voiceover would go a long way towards setting out some expectations ;)

Found you on devmag.org.za, searched Google they were on top of the list, it seems that site is not updated anymore. So I checked their links and this site was still online and alive. I did do some searching for local SA indie sites a year or so ago, nothing really stood out, problem seems to be that SA sites go dead after the initial hype, we don't have the numbers. However I was surprised by the number of projects listed here, looks like the indie scene is doing good ATM.

TBH, it was a year on-off working on the game, I had some other projects during the same time. As for the commentary, I'm originally from Serbia/Croatia, so my English sounds a bit eastern European even though we moved here a long time ago. I prefer to have a product ready before I put anything online, so about a week ago when it was finished I put everything online.

Would like to enter the Rage competition if possible.

Hey guys, it's been a few months, Galaxy Union is now up on Desura and Steam Greenlight and Shineyloot. In this time, I have made a new trailer and got a few video reviews.

I would just like to share some experience with you. Launch is very important, most of your sales come from it, visitor graphs show that virtually 75-90% of your interest comes within the first month on a site. Steam Greenlight can generate a lot of interest, but not as many sales even if you include links. You need to have good promotional material ready, trailer is essential.

So with my noob first ever attempt of publishing a game, I have not yet received a payment. I have started work on a new game (Space Duty) and this time it will be different ;)

    Nice improvement on the trailer!

And thanks for sharing your experience. That kind of sharing really helps the community.

If you need some feedback on Space Duty from developers (who would be more willing to look past alpha stage rough edges) then please do post progress/questions etc here.

This isn't really a community you can expect to get sales out of posting... but many of us have released games and would like to help others by sharing our experiences.

(@dislekcia , who posted earlier in this thread, for instance was part of the team that developed the very successful Desktop Dungeons, which is also a turn-based game, albeit a puzzle rogue-like one, and he is also a business wizard (by night). I'm just trying to say we'd like to help, and there are some brains here filled with useful information, but you've got to ask for it first )

  • Thanks, trust me I'm not here to generate sales, just trying to get involved in the local community a bit more.

As for Space Duty, thanks for the offer, I might need some input at a later stage, it's still a bit too early to be asking for feedback and I'm sure to need some testing at some point. Gonna make a separate topic for Space Duty and leave this one for Galaxy Union.
  • Hey guys, Hacker World Online made it to the top 100 on Steam Greenlight. To celebrate here are some Desura keys for Galaxy Union.

  • Any reason you didn't post Hacker World Online here for feedback/testing?
  • HWO is about two or three years old, it's a client-server game and the server has in that time crashed and been taken offline. All this happened before I joined the community.

It would take some effort to have it back online, depending on Greenlight, I'm planning of converting the WCF service to Azure, rebuild the DB into Azure DB and add some sort of tutorial system.

However this is not a priority at the moment, I'm currently working on Space Duty, also planning to make a topic here for it as soon as I have something playable.
  • Galaxy Union has been greenlit today, feeling all nice and fuzzy.
  • A quick update, Galaxy Union is now on Steam.
  • That's cool! It looks like it's been live for just over a month (from the Steam release date). How have things been so far? Did you have a marketing plan in place to get some coverage? Any noteworthy coverage so far?

  • The game is very niche so the numbers reflect that, I have given away about 50 keys to the press, mostly you-tubers and twitch streamers, no mention in any significant gaming press though, just one interview.

As for the financials, it's pocket money, not something you can live off.
