Web developer needed

edited in General
Hi ye' all,
What would a typical quote be to develop a website with a complicated back-end that has a database, registration services, etc. We need one and we're a bit worried about the quotes we're getting. I know it's not game related but since you're all developers I thought you might be able to help with advice ;)

  • It's a bit difficult to give you an estimate with no brief. I know that regular sites with no real complexity in the back-end can typically go up to R20,000 (These are basic sites). There are a lot of factor's in play here, design can also have an impact, meaning you get what you pay for. Cheap can be crappy design and vice versa.

As for back-end it might sound simple but can also take a lot more time to develop. That being said, try to make use of existing tools and technologies. To give an example, say you want to make an online store...setup WordPress to manage your content, install WooCommerce to manage your products and payments and so on. Also have scalability in mind, so if you were going bigger maybe consider Magento.

Using existing tools will make getting another developer on-board much easier. Most heavy lifting would then have already been done by those tools as well as the high chance of a big community behind that tool already. This helps a lot when you encounter problems.

Hope that helps. What were the price ranges you were getting?
  • I've been in the web/web app business for 12 years.
I can just say that it will vary so much. Like devs with different tech backgrounds and tech usage will
have a different way of looking at their product, time, value etc. In the end you can have one freelance
developer with a price of R5 000 and a company with a quote of R200k.

Yes cheapest is mostly not a good idea but in my experience the latter has got it's own issues.
Feel free to pm me if you need some advice.
  • This really has nothing to do with game development. I realise it's a lot more innocent than most of these sorts of posts, but if we allow this, we'll start getting spammed by recruiters for totally unrelated stuff again :(
