[Event] Tech4Afrika (2-3 May) - Looking for speakers

edited in Events
Hello all!

So I've submitted a talk to Tech4Afrika grandiosely title, 'How South African Games took over the world.' They've said it's likely to be accepted and they asked me to spread the word among other game people because they're hoping to have an entire morning of game dev related talks. So if you'll be in Joburg on those days and have an idea for a talk that's game related then submit it! :)

Many of you might squirm at the though of attending a mainstream tech event, but this one is quite quirky and progressive. From their front page:

"We do not merely aspire to the heady heights of conformity through neutrality, blandness and crass marketing. You probably don't even care that this rebellious little event contains no agenda or bullshit and looks only for the finest content we can find. Just go back to schmoozing at your mass marketed, bland, cheaply run watered down "networking functions", and close the browser behind you. Tech4Africa is about breaking rules, upsetting trends and unsettling institutions but first and foremost, great content. The kind of content people talk about."

I'm also organizing an exhibition of local games and a game of Joust to be at the conference to liven things up :P.

So voting for talks is up. Please vote for our talks talk and mine

How South African games took over the world (@Bensonance)

Teaching Game Design in South Africa (@hanligeyser)

This is a great platform for us to talk at for several reasons. We will be winning hearts and minds of the IT sector of business one of the places that has the budget and knowledge of how software is produced. More importantly we will be talking to 100's of potential game developers and this might really help to swell up our community bring some unknown talent to the make games table.

  • Would we be able to watch these talks after the fact somewhere? I don't think I'll be able to attend the event, so it would be cool to still be able to see them.
  • @Rigormortis

Just looking at their YouTube channel it does look like they've recorded previous years' talks - haven't heard anything officially though :).
  • If they don't we should find out if we may.
  • How board games can change small communities. I would be willing to do that talk

  • @Cheatsi

I'd listen to that talk :D. Pity this event is about technology - but you should do that for A MAZE this year :D.

  • @Cheatsi Definitely submit that to AMAZE.

Wow just looked over the votes the games topics are doing well. What surprised me was the number of - votes on a lot of talks. Didn't expect that at all.
  • I sort of wrote a talk when this first popped up, but it meanders and is about game design as a useful discipline and then it's about school being a terrible game and then people sent me links to articles about learning math in neat ways and then I got depressed a bit.
  • I've added my votes to the mix, let's hope the game talks stay ahead.

Voted! (two days ago). Very cool to see that games as a subject seem to be getting more interest than others :) Either that or we got some super kickass value in having an association :P

  • It seems we have been voted down pretty heavily in places :(
  • @hanli yes all of our talks quite specifically, bit odd. Guess there isn't the amount of interest we had hoped.
  • BUMP I am bumping this thread up again, please anyone that hasn't voted yes, why not and please get there and vote for our talks. Thanks.

Sounds fascinating! Could you write it up as a blog post for now? It would be of great interest to the gamification community.
