2013 Prototype Montage!

edited in Projects
I was thinking would be pretty rad to round up footage of as many of the prototypes from last year as possible and make a short montage.
We could watch it the meet up and reflect on all of the cool stuff people made last year. What do you guys think?

Comments

  • What do you need to make this happen? Do you want people to submit their pictures or videos? Do you want them in a standard size?
  • Awesome Idea, I propose 3 seconds of your most entertaining gameplay..... in gif format!
  • Gifs are rad, but they are a bit cumbersome for editing purposes.

I like the idea of self-editing the clips to be shorter.
I think lets make it 5 sec per clip.
Optimal footage is 1920x1080 but submit whatever you have and I will make a plan. Try target a 16:9 aspect ratio though.
Perhaps someone local can provide a soundtrack?

Submissions don't need to be exactly from last year, if they are from Nov/Dec of 2012 that's close enough. I know a lot of stuff was made at Ludum Dare Dec.
  • Does SokoBomber count? I started working on it in Dec last year.
  • @Merrick When do you want videos submitted by?
  • @edg3 I think we should keep the gameplay montage to just prototypes posted to the forums in 2013?

I would like to see the montage become a yearly thing, so you don't need to worry about getting into this year's video, I think? :)
  • We definitely want to submit our 30 game prototypes, but obviously don't want to take up 30 slots ;) It would be cool if we could some how get them in the same frame, but we don't know how to and we dont have the software. Does anyone have an idea of what we could do?
  • @edg3: Sure the more the merrier! It would be cool to do it every year, but who knows if that will actually happen.

That would be rad. Do you think you could fit them all into 20 to 30 seconds?
Regarding editing: You can get pretty far with windows movie maker, which is free and pretty intuitive to use.

Does next Wednesday sound like a reasonable deadline?

If you don't have time to edit the footage you can give me what you have and I will do a terrible job of distilling the essence of your game :P

It's chilled, just wanted to check, I only wanted to know because I will be making videos of SokoBomber soon anyway :P

Yup that should be cool. We'll play around with it and send something through.

    Here's a link to my 5 seconds for Archer9000: https://www.mediafire.com/?ed7b4ceb1xlge87

Here's the free tools I used to make it happen for those who don't know how:
Open Broadcaster Software - easy to use screen capturing software.
Windows Movie Maker - First time user and it couldn't have been simpler.
  • Can you work with Youtube links?
Here's my Bear Chuck video, it's unedited unfortunately, I haven't had time lately, but let me know if you *really* need an edit or if you need the original file.

    Thanks! :D

Is it possible for you to dropbox me a public link to the original video. Else I have to find software to rip it and deal with youtube's compression.

@Tuism, aside note is that your video is 5mins long and not 5seconds as required, which means whoever is going to do the final edit needs to then cut your video up. I can bet that they won't edit the the best 5 seconds of your game, which will be a shame.

It would be awesome if everyone could edit their videos to the appropriate format. 16:9 , 5 seconds, it can take less than 15 mins.
  • Yeah I agree, I hadn't had the time, but I'll make time for it and do an edit :) Thanks!

  • Thanks for doing this @Merrik! It's awesome recollecting some of the games I've made over the last year.

Here's a zip of the clips:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/47128093/manikin_clips.zip

There are four of them there, so if that's too many for the amount of time, you can scrap the Space Hell one because it didn't really get as far as the others.
    Thanked by 1Merrik
  • Thanks @Manikin those clips are great. It's amazing how much you got done last year!

  • OK here's my 5 second edit! Bears! Crop! Explosions!

@Merrik For youtube videos you can use the javascript book mark supplied on http://deturl.com/. You just click on the bookmark and it supplies easy to use download links above the youtube video page you are on.

Its the easiest video downloader I have ever used and there are options for different video qualities too.
[Edit:] Just note that the book mark tends to fail if you are using the https_everywhere browser add-on.

  • Thanks for that link, looks useful, I use http://keepvid.com/, but sometimes it's buggy. Good to have alternatives :)

Deturl.com and www.pwnyoutube.com are kind of like an amalgamation of short links to keepvid.com and similar downloaders. Its just easier to remember to add "pwn" to your "www.youtube.com/watch" links or using the bookmark rather than going to Keepvid.com :)
(The bookmark works for vimeo and other sites too)

here is my youtube vid of game footage (it's all pretty much the same, if it is a 5s section where things are moving, it's good)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN7e7dwae00

I don't have the video editing software to cut it up myself >.< can try make a plan if you just want a 5s clip but any moving 5s clip from the vid is fine by me

[edit] Just read the earlier posts properly, I'll try dropbox the original tonight

P.S: I have a vid with music but I assume that a vid without is better for editing your own music over it, no?

Send me the clip with music. I'm not sure if there will be a soundtrack yet.

@raxter: would you mind creating a clip for Neon Shadow? You can use Windows Movie Maker for editing.

Though not as broad as the pwn technique, I add ss after the www. and it hasn't let me down yet, even getting past teh work proxy server :D
  • @Merrik

Can't wait to see how it comes out :)

    Here is our vid:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/ot7ghb8lqqwmie8/30prototpypevideo.wmv

It's about 1s / game, but just shout if it is too long.

    Thanks @hermantulleken

There are some really interesting ideas there.

Here is a very rough cut of what we have so far.

The music is not indicative of the final product. Any suggestions as to how it should be scored?

@Manikin what about that evolution game you made for one of the Ludum Dares?
    Thanked by 1dammit
  • @Merrik Looking good! I don't particularly mind music instead of the games' sounds - it might be a bit chaotic flipping back and forth between different sounds every 5 seconds.
That evolution game was last year unfortunately! :)

    MOAR prototype videos!
  • edited
Awesome work! :D Do I need to give you a higher resolution video? I thought I did give you a video to spec... did I mess the ratio up? Also, didn't we have like, 200+ prototypes? GUYS WHERE ARE YOUR STUFFS :)
  • ahh, totally forgot to get you the vids, going to do so today!

@Merrik I don't have access to NS other than the version installed on my cellphone, so it's whatever you can rip from youtube unfortunately
  • Hey! There are things in there I haven't played... Where's the leg-ball thing? What about to 3D-point-field-rotating-line-drawing-jobbo?
  • @dislekcia: Those were just prototypes I made last year that didn't go anywhere. The line drawing thing was going to be a turn based solar system conquest game where ships travel along interpolated splines.

    Wow, time flies...

  • Tuism said:

720p is fine. I will sort out scale issues in the final cut,
  • @Merrik, when are you aiming to have this done? I want to send you some of mine as well but I'm not finding time atm. I'm trying to make some time in next week though. Would that still be in time?
  • I wanted to have it done by the meet up next week, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
  • It would be great to have the person/studio's name with the title of the prototype the corner of each prototype so I can look them up if I didn't get to play them during the year. :)
    Thanked by 2Tuism damousey
  • I just realised I have more stuff from last year, I'm gonna try and get more videos to you, is that fine? :D

    Also, yes Elyaradine's idea +1 :)
  • That looks awesome. Any chance we could get an end-tro with the MSGA logo and a link back to the website?
    Thanked by 2Tuism Merrik

    Yes!
I'm trying to make some time in next week though
Sure. Try get it to me by wed if possible.
  • Hey, here's some footage from SIJO's "Khumba the Game"

    Awesome idea! Thanks @Merrik

@mushu Thanks. Is it possible for you to give me a direct download link?
Also, if you can just give me a 5 sec clip, that would be pretty bitching.
  • Could the tag line at the end be "Got Game? Join us at www.makegamessa.com" ?

Had that stuck in my head for days and needed to share.
  • @dammit, @Merrik, actually I have the MGSA logo video. Let me give you the link to add please (also been meaning to share).

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/whgyfsusu0k0f17/MGSA.mp4

  • @Fengol

We've been hoping to find that! It's really awesome :D.
  • I got two more video for you! It's 5 seconds!

  • finally! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/63346058/6-Fold%20Mass%20Production%20Early%20Preview.mp4

take seconds 5-10, I don't have editing software, any 5s where it is moving will do. Lemme know if this is alright
    Thanked by 1Merrik
  • @raxter if you have iPad you can get iMovie and edit with that. I do that :) Otherwise... Anyone with simple movie editing software?
  • I just saw this now. Will send a couple more tomorrow.
