Make Games Sketchgroup Week #2

This week the sketch group goal is to draw a "creature" sketch. <img src="http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/158e1c5ea42811e1a39b1231381b7ba1_7.jpg"> This is for a creature that could appear in a game, think RPG monsters, think fantasy pet games, think wildlife in science fiction sagas, think boss-fights vs giant aliens. Subchallenge: Use existing animal anatomy in a creative way to form your creature. The manifesto of the sketchgroup can be found here: http://www.makegamessa.com/discussion/9/makegames-sketchgroup (written up by Bevis) So everyone who wants to do this, suggest a theme here and start sketching in whatever way makes you happy (from crayons by candlelight through to digital sketching on your Intuos 4, it's all good). My suggestion for a theme: A Tropical Hand-Horse.

I'd like to suggest two themes, if that's okay with the rules... My non-original, theme inspired by (shamelessly ripped from) a well known fantasy author is Sentient Luggage! Not many people know this, but they're actually closely related to the <a href="http://cghub.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=40615&stc=1&d=1299095310">Mimic</a>. My own idea would be Cave-dwelling silicoid crystal spiders. Think of something you'd run into down deep in the mines on Persei 8. Normally dormant, they're deceptively quick and make the most terrific screeching noise when running at full speed, due to all the crystal structures grinding and sliding over each other. Just posting what I've got so far, because I keep sniggering at him and had to share. Meet Ol' Gropey!From a distance, he looks like a handsome stallion. Indeed, get closer, and his manners seem impeccable. Disarming, even. He's quite the charmer, with his snow-white, lens-flared smile. Under the act, he's quite a dirty old horse, groping virgins left, right and centre, every chance that he gets, with his ape-like appendages. Many a time has the sound of male indignation fallen on deaf (though beautiful, and curvy!) ears. "It was the horse, baby! I swear!" He hangs around beaches, where his hands are more difficult to spot, and where bikini-clad women are in abundance. Aye, he's indeed a Tropical Hand-Horse.

Hahaha! I'm glad you picked that, because I had absolutely no idea what it'd look like! 
I like the personality in his face!
He actually looks very respectable. If I saw him in a story, I'd picture him as the wise mentor who chastises me for not doing my homework... but who later turns out to be this epic warrior. And then I realise, damn, I really should have done my maths homework, because maybe I'd have ended up as a buff warrior like him! :pCool that you played with some foreshortening and stuff too! I think his pose is a little awkward, and there are problems with perspective, but overall it's a really sweet drawing, lots of little things that enhance his personality and design! :D Yay!

@Elyaradine: What an amazing lil' narrative to go with the demon, I love it! He'd fight to protect a class of demon kids, who'd previously thought him an uncool old fossil, and then turn around an crack a maths pun, before charging back into battle. How awesome! <div> </div><div>Thanks for your comments too - next time I want to really try to force myself to rough out the overall pose/composition first. I find myself doing that to an extent, like roughing out a shape for the head and part of the torso first, but then I start getting into detail and end up getting caught in a corner when it comes to things like that chair and the legs.</div><div> </div><div>@Pomb: Foreshortening fail or not, I think that looks great! The jackalope has gone from cute and cuddly (and kinda weird, let's face it), to a terrifying bastard! Very cool stuff man.</div>

Sorry this is quite a late entry and I didnt get time to post a theme :( I'm a programmer and havent drawn since grade 9 art but I gave it a shot :) Its supposed to be a chrystal spider with her baby in a chrystal egg... I dont think the small image makes it obvious so please download it. Hoping for some awesome drawing tips from you guys! Edit: Oh and I stole my sisters wacom tablet + used photoshop and its uncanny ability to steal all 8gigs of ram in my laptop :/

@Pomb: I think that's really cool! :D He's not quite jumping, but I'm sure he could if he wanted to... :D@creative630: For not having drawn in years (I assume), that's actually really cool! :D Especially if you haven't use a tablet much! I think it'd look much more spidery if its legs were longer. I think if you measured spiders across their width, at least three quarters would be taken up by their legs, so they can really be very long. (Currently, the proportions of legs to body is more like lice I think...) The curvature of the legs can sometimes be quite interesting too, where the joints don't necessarily all curve the same way. Sometimes, the bottom joint actually curves backwards, sort of a weird S-shape, which imo looks a lot more interesting! Nice job on the webbing! :DAnd PS shouldn't use 8GB. :/ That's... really crazy. I don't even use 8GB on my A2-sized paintings!

@Brakus - Thats really cool! @Elyaradine - Thanks for the tips! I didnt even notice how short the legs were until now. I'm not sure what happened to photoshop, it just started destroying my laptops hardware :( I have used my sisters tablet a once or twice before so luckily I wasnt a complete novice. I learnt alot while using it again though, was fun experimenting with all the brushes in photoshop.
