Grunt 1914

edited in Projects
A Throwback to the roots of classic first person shooting

Think back to a time when military shooters were so dominant and important in your gaming schedule, what made them so good? It's simple, They were fun! No boats, tanks or jets to do your work for you - keep those boots on the ground! You are a soldier, you have your guns, your body and most vitally your mettle! Head out, Grunt!

With a distinctly historical arsenal made available to you, you can choose to play any way you want. A selection of the weaponry also contains attachments that were either in use on the field or being tested at the time, giving you lots of options! Unlock more guns as you progress through the ranks to become the ultimate foot-soldier!

Come sun, rain or snow in darkness or light, war will rage on!

What's the forecast? You choose! You can play in clear, rainy or snowy settings in Grunt1914. These selections have a distinct effect on the maps you choose to fight on, as the visibility and controls adapt to the weather cycle at play! As the fog fills the air and the snow piles will you be able to hold your nerve and take that perfect shot? Time will tell!

The Axis vs the Allies, blood will flow!

It's the classic story as we've heard it told many times before, the story of brutality and fear, yet also victory and brave hearts! You can play as either a soldier from the Axis alignment, or the Allies confederation. Take up arms in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Gun-Game modes as you rush to be proclaimed the victor above all others!

Bordered arenas with tons of tricks and turns

Do not desert the battle soldier! Grunt1914 features eight distinct and robust maps to explore and seek triumph in! These are all based on real life locations from novel and peculiar theaters of war of that historical time. Each map features certain unique traits and areas to uncover and unravel, as you make your way through deserts, forests, tombs, military bases, underground hospitals, towns and many more rare areas!

Skill above all else

There are no power-ups or buffs to help you here, no powers or special treatments to be had. Only one thing matters in Grunt1914, your tactics! How you react and the way you play will decide your fate! There are no vehicles or mounts to save you! Your skill is all you have here! Are you a sniper that favorites long range kills, are you a run and gun heavy grunt or are you sneaky silencer type? You can be any class you want, as long as you can survive!

The nostalgia of a classic interface

Brave the harsh battlefields and arenas with a compass and map in hand, use those senses to locate enemies on the field! All of these are neatly laid out and visible to you at all times, exactly when and where you will need them! Use these tools to your advantage to turn the tide and become the victor when all seems lost!

    Pictures are pretty :)

Is there any gameplay to see? A prototype to play? Something that shows off the day/night/weather system? The fact is that I really can't tell you anything that might be of any help based on some words.
  • We are pretty good at giving critique in this community, some can even give experience based advice, more so than absorbing advertising. You should consider dropping a demo here for feedback before the gameplay features are set in stone. Otherwise , what you presented looks good.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I had to leave before I had a chance to finish the post so I couldn't upload pictures. Ill do it now.

In the coming months I will release the details about the testing phase of development and everyone can try it out.

This video features a few rounds of Beta game play that was privately carried out between a small group of players.

There are a variety of maps shown in the video, but in the full game there are many more. Each map can be played in any weather condition that the match host selects.

The video also shows a big selection of the weapons in the game, but there are even more in the full release.

The footage captured is not final but is near a release state.

  • Congrats for pushing it so far so far!

I'd just like to ask what kind of focus your marketing is on, as that's pretty crucial, especially considering your game LOOKS pretty much identical to all sorts of other games, but with lower fidelity. Devs can appreciate the amount of work a project has taken, but consumers don't care.

"Face off in puny to massive arena's with an arsenal of gear and weaponry to proclaim yourself the victor above all others!"

This doesn't tell me anything at all that differentiate the game from Battleground, Modern Warfare, COD, or any number of arena-shooters that are everywhere right now.

If you have something unique - you need to focus on that first and foremost!

    Thanks for the comment.

Yeah I've definitely been struggling with marketing, Its been an upward learning curve, definitely not my strong point. Having been a solo dev on this things have shifted many times, but I guess that's how you learn.

The project has spanned over so many years that the focus has constantly changed but I think the main drawing point is the amount of options available to the match host and the amount of game modes on offer. For example the weather options and soon after release each map will have a day/night option.

Apart from this the game also has a large amount of maps (8 with 8 more planned post release) and a large amount of weapons with more planned.

I guess I could focus on that factor more.

  • Grunt1914 now has a Steam page and a solid release date which is May 1st.

  • The game looks fun. I think if it is fun then people will play it. And I cant see any lag issues for not having local servers.

Will there be any more future betas before launch? We will be able to get a better feel for the game once we can experience the gameplay mechanics.
  • Well done on this, it's not bad at all for a solo project.

Working on a fps game myself and its not easy to say the least.

I watched your video and I must say it looks quite fun. People like to play fun games and that's all you need to get the ball rolling.

    This definitely has potential.

  • Please do share your release experience.
  • This is the update for a new gun, the Lewis gun.

The Lewis gun is a classic in world war folklore and history, making it a must have for Grunt1914. The gun is of English origin and was mass produced in England during its early lifetime in 1914.

Using advanced cooling techniques the gun has a 47 round pan magazine. It has a incredible RPM of 600 in Grunt1914 and does allot of damage over a short period!

Using this new weapon you are sure to become the ultimate run and gun grunt out there on the battlefield! Heavy style!

    image
  • This is the first update for a new map, called Freight.

Freight is a smaller map than the rest of the maps in Grunt1914 and was designed specially for close quarters fighting. Shotguns, sub-machine guns and pistols will work best here, with rifles and machine guns having to take the back seat on this one.

Freight has an assortment of crates, boxes, barrels and containers varying in sizes strewn about the area to provide cover for grunts in the heat of battle. The map is as the name suggests a stockpile of goods and weaponry stored away for the troops in the field.

This update includes all the weather options for the map, with clear, rainy and snowy conditions available.

The map is due to change in the coming weeks based on player feedback.

    image
  • In this update the main menu and specifically hosting of matches is altered extensively.

You can now see an image of the map when selecting it and there are icons indicating whether you are playing in clear, rainy or snowy conditions.

The login name is also now saved so that it isn't necessary to type it in every session.

There was some confusion among users when selecting maps before, this update aims to eradicate that issue.

This feature is due to be altered further going forward.

    image
  • In this new update ammo stations are introduced to the game.

These are placed randomly and strategically around the map and are there to naturally provide the players with more ammo when they run out of bullets. Combat can be fast and brutal and munition stocks usually drop fast in the heat of battle.

They are intractable by simply walking near them, they then add a certain amount of ammo to your gun's available munitions.

The stations are destroyed when depleted but re-spawn to the same location every 10 seconds once destroyed, ensuring the battle rages on!

    image
  • This is the second update for a new map, called Express.

Express is by far the smallest map in the game and is suitable for very small team death-match games or as little as one on one death-match or gun-game rounds. Shotguns, sub-machine guns and pistols will work best here, with rifles and machine guns being too slow and heavy to really challenge on this map.

Express has a multitude of boxes, crates, props and other such miscellaneous items strewn about on a train. The entire map is on a underground troop and supply train, moving between battles. The train contains a storage cart, and three barracks carts to explore and fight on. Access to the cockpit is locked.

This map is only an interior and as such only has the clear weather option.

This map is quite experimental at this stage, and as of yet it is unclear how players will find the experience. As such the map is due to change in the coming weeks based on player feedback.

    image
  • In this update the advanced graphical selection and choices are vastly improved and expanded on. With this update all major post processing features that are used within Grunt1914 can now be tuned.

These settings include Ambient Occlusion, AntiAliasing, ScreenSpaceReflection, MotionBlur, Bloom, ChromaticAberation and Vignetting. These all affects performance and fine tuning the settings will get each player the experience they desire in terms of quality vs. performance.

This update aims to improve the experience for players that have difficulty running the game at maximum settings, by providing many more options to select or deselect.

At the bottom of the graphics settings menu there is a ""performance bar", this shows the player what the current state of quality vs. performance is - represented by a color slider. All advanced settings are color coded to represent its level of performance. AmbientOcclusion for example is very intensive so its red, whereas Vignetting is very light, and is then green as a result.

As is clearly represented above, there is a huge gap between maximum and minimum settings, hopefully this will help bridge the performance issues for some players.

This feature is due to be altered further going forward.

    image
  • This is the update for a new gun, the Hotchkiss M1914.

The Hotchkiss M1914 is a lesser known weapon in world war history, making it an interesting addition for Grunt1914. The gun is of French origin and was mass produced for the French military for use in overseas colonies.

Using gas cooling techniques the gun has a 30 round strip magazine. It has a massive RPM of 550 in Grunt1914 and does medium damage over a short period.

This is a great weapon for all round use on the battlefield. Its effective for close, medium and even long ranged combat with its overall ammunition capacity and effective fire rate.

    Sure,

It went pretty well, actually a lot better than I expected.

Using steam has been pretty easy and effective, it seems like they have some moderation now.

I plan to keep continuing with updates for the game throughout early access.
  • Are there any specifics that you can share with us regarding your release? Sales data? Review numbers? Wishlist rates? Views? Any marketing? Any conversion from marketing? People coming from other channels that you can tell? Any numbers at all, over time?

Would be great to learn through experience. Thanks :)

Alright, guess I can go into some more detail.

Reviews numbers have been quite low, probably around 3% of sales leave reviews, I think its around 70-80% in terms of positive reviews.

Steam allows you to directly contact curators, around 10% of the ones I approached made a review, these can be seen directly from a game's page. I think around 80% of those are positive.

I have been very active with updates, I suspect that has caused the sales to maintain a steady number. I think inactive pages will see massive drop-offs in wishlists and sales.

In terms of wishlists, I think around 10% of those convert to sales. I suspect that a big portion of the rest are waiting for the full release.

I'm not comfortable sharing exact numbers, but its been quite decent.

One thing thats been strange to note is that a small portion of customers have been super negative and direct messaging me constantly, but for some reason have not returned the game, and keep playing it. For me its about 2 people that do that.

On refunds, about 20% of overall sales has been refunded.

My game is a WW1 FPS game so naturally thats one of the most controversial genres in terms of the opinion spectrum. I think if one made generic puzzle/casual games, like cart racing or marble games, the sales would be really good.

I haven't been able to do too much marketing due to a low budget, so most of my marketing happens through Facebook, direct contact and discord, as well as twitter. Ill start using Instagram soon too though, seems like its replaced Facebook now. Other than that I'm pretty active on forums and other sites like IndieDB.

Ive been doing alot of giveaways too to raise awareness, its been quite effective.

All in all, a solid first release for me.
    Thanked by 2Tuism critic
  • Great, thanks for sharing :)

I think it would be very good to have a record of the numbers over time, and see if any events cause/correspond with any changes at specific times. Like for example if 3% of sales leave reviews, at this time, maybe later it changes due to something. So tracking the numbers over time and according to events (sales, specific updates, specific publicity, whatever) would benefit yourself and others in terms of learning what has what influence, and maybe doing more things that move the needle more rather than less.

    All the best :)
  • Yeah for sure. As things happens ill update here, might help someone.

I'm going to be participating in the upcoming steam sale too, will see how that goes.

One thing I didn't mention is impressions. You get a massive amount of impressions from steam. About 0,5% is from external and the rest is from the store. From my impressions about 10% become visits and then of that about 10% becomes sales. So for me I get about 1% sales of the overall impressions.

I know that on average mid tier indie titles make 10000-25000 sales, at my rate I'll reach that by the end of the year or so.

Interestingly though, about 50% of my total sales have been from South Africa, which makes up most of that 0,5% margin of external impressions. So it seems like direct marketing still remains the most effective. Which is what I did to South Africans mainly through Facebook.

  • For the MGSA review on Steam, where are you based?
  • I'm based in Kuruman this year, but usually live around Pretoria East.
  • Grenades have now officially been added to the game!

Grenades are the newest and an especially exiting addition to Grunt1914! They can be used either in the traditional sense as "quick throw" items by pressing the mapped key or the can be selected as a weapon slot.

This update includes three grenades that can be used at any level. The update introduces explosive grenades as well as smoke grenades, more grenade types will be added into the game in the future.

In this update the three grenades that are made available are :

    - The MKII Grenade
    - The MKI Smoke grenade
    - The Stielhandgranate

This update will allow for many new ways to play the maps in the game with any game mode, and will lead to some tense and exciting battles!

This feature is due to change in the coming weeks based on player feedback and internal testing.

    image
  • Melee combat has now officially been added to the game!

Melee combat is the newest and a very exiting addition to Grunt1914! They can be used by being selected as a weapon slot.

This update includes two melee weapons that can be used at any level. The update introduces the possibility of a range of weapons that might be bought into the game in the near future.

In this update the two weapons that are made available are :

    - The M1916 Shovel
    - The M1829 Artillery sabre

This update will allow for many new ways to play the maps in the game with any game mode, and will lead to some tense and exciting battles!

This feature is due to change in the coming weeks based on player feedback and internal testing.

    image
  • In this update the the weapons that are currently selected are visible in the game while you play through weapon slots in the bottom right corner.

This update makes it easier to see which weapons are currently selected and which are in your current loadout.

    image
  • This is the update for a new gun, the Parker VH 1916 sawed off shotgun.

The Parker VH 1916 is a very scarcely elected weapon in world war history, making it a very interesting addition for Grunt1914. The gun is of American origin and was barely used in the Great war.

The Parker brothers made all their guns by hand and was of exceptional quality. All of their guns were made to the same excellent quality.

The Parker VH 1916 has double triggers, 16 inch barrels instead of the usual 30 inch ones and delivers some serious firepower.

With its short range but massive power the weapon was perfect for defense inside the trenches of the massive battles of the war. Sawed of shotguns made great replacements as secondary firearms due to their concealment and agility capabilities.

This is the update for a new weapon, the Trench Raiding Club.

The Trench Raiding Club is a widely used weapon in world war history, especially in battles where trenches were prominent. This makes it a very interesting addition for Grunt1914.

This melee oriented club is a handmade version of a more structured and mechanically formed club, with spikes or nails hammered through, to deliver piercing damage as an extra feature. These were often made from existing clubs or even sturdy branches or logs, with relative ease.

Because of its availability weapons like these were often made in bulk from small groves or logging encampments near battle sites. They would be given to soldiers as an extra means of protection or in some cases assault.

This weapon has little stab damage, but excellent charge and swing damage, making it useful as an all round melee option, regardless of its slower speed. One hits kills are often possible with this weapon, if aimed at the upper body or head region of a soldier.

    image
  • This is the update for a new weapon, the US Bolo Machete M1909.

The M1909 Bolo Machete was designed to aid US soldiers with jungle foliage and heavy bushes that they often struggled to traverse. The machete turned out to become a great fighting weapon too, and was used for both a travel tool and a combat weapon.

It was designed to be carried as an additional melee weapon from its first production in 1909 to its final production in 1915. Only around 17000 were produced making them pretty rare.

This weapon has massive stab damage, with medium charge and swing damage, making it useful as an all round melee option, especially because of its high speed.

  • This is the update for a new gun, the M1903 Springfield rifle.

Over 84, 0000 of these rifles had been produced at Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal for use in world war one, making it a very popular choice among US snipers and infantrymen.

The model 1903, is an American five-round magazine fed, bolt-action service repeating rifle, which was also the official US rifle at a stage. At long range the weapon is very effective and deadly if used accurately.

The rifle saw use long after world war one, making it as far as Vietnam. This shows the quality and overall effectiveness of the rifle even more.

    image
  • This is the third update for a new map, called Crater.

Crater is a large, open ended sniping based map that can support a massive amount of players due to the surface area and many locations to explore. This map is largely suited to long range weapons such as rifles or longer range machine guns.

The theme is a large desolated quarry that has tons of cover and vantage areas strewn about, providing plenty of cover for both long and short ranged combat battles.

The map support all the weather conditions, being - clear, rainy and snowy.

This map is quite experimental at this stage, and as of yet it is unclear how players will find the experience. As such the map is due to change in the coming weeks based on player feedback.
